    #We-aren't-looking-for-anymore-workawayers until #2017!!

We are Brendan and Janelle and live on the far west coast of County Mayo. The ocean is our livelihood and we fish in Blacksod Bay and around the very dramatic and historical islands in the Atlantic Ocean. We would welcome a mature couple (age 25+) looking for a 7-10 day stay.

Most tasks onboard include cooking snacks, making a brew, stacking pots or preparing bait. They are all easy but it can take a little time to become familiar with doing them on a boat. You don't need any prior boat experience, only willingness and openness to have fun and learn. We spend the whole day out fishing but you only need to help the required amount of time.

We also have various other projects happening throughout summer around our property, light gardening, maintenance of sheds and land, tidying up etc etc which we will work at on days we do not fish.

We can supply all gear you need for fishing but you will find it a little comfier if you can bring along your own pair of wellies, a jacket (that doesn't have too much sentimental value), a sun hat and beanie.

What we offer is to share a place in our family. We provide a cozy cottage with an open fireplace, 3 meals a day, hot shower, a double bed (in a bedroom), and limited wifi. NOTE THAT IF YOU ARE TWO FRIENDS YOU WILL HAVE TO SHARE A BED, WE ONLY HAVE A BIG ONE.

Our hours follows this procedure: Flexibility. It's a lifestyle here; our work and our playtime run together.

    What else ...

The far west coast of Mayo is an area where you will love if you are into history, nature or solitude. A small village nearby has conveniences and the town is 12 miles, which is serviced by bus once daily. There is a pub a mile from our house, a swimming beach opposite our house and many more sandy or secluded rocky shores to walk along plus loads of lovely Irish country roads through villages, bogs and historical sites. We have bikes you can explore with.

*Because fishing is reputed to be one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, it is VIP that you have an insurance policy for yourselves. Our boat is fully compliant with Irish safety regulations and both of us are trained in first aid.
*If you want, you can bring some gear for comfort of your own size. Wellies, sun hat/beanie or a windproof jacket are the most important, but a jacket you don’t mind getting smelly or salty (and potentially destroyed!). We have spare wellies and jackets and oilskins.

If you consider yourselves suitable, write to us for more information and introduce yourselves.... who you are..... where you come from and are going..... what you want from your experiences of volunteering..... when you want to come etc etc etc....

Please note we are unable to accept people wishing to improve their English skills.

Here you will learn a lot about the ocean, and how our job as fishermen ties into the cycle of the tides and moon and weather, how to find and catch crabs and lobsters, and about sustainable fishing. If you are mechanically minded, you can lean about the boat itself, how to use the electronics and maintain the engine. You can learn how to tie a bow line, how to speak Irish or how to cook seafood to perfection. There are many types of seafood you can try other than crab or lobster. You can pick you own mussels, clams or take a fishing rod.
