It is a small family business which is currently in the process of being passed down a generation. Dot, (the younger generation) is also studying part time in Manchester and splits her time between university work and the farm. Assignments have kept her from spending as much time at the farm as she would like which means Joy and Mac (the older generation) are not getting to retire as early as they had hoped! We take farmhands to help us during this busy time of transition. Our award winning farm is continuously developing sustainable farming and educational working practices. We have a range of animals, some of which we keep seasonally. Livestock includes a flock of hill sheep, pigs, poultry, Goats, cows, farm cats and working sheep dogs. There are 2 large vegetable gardens, a young woodland (we have plans for coppicing this for firewood and building) and a large fishing pond. There are many opportunities for you to learn and develop life skills while you are here. These include learning to dry stone wall, hedge laying, splicing rope work, livestock care particularly poultry, sheep, goats and pigs, woodwork, forestry work, gardening for food production, Jam and chutney making and other preserving techniques, harvesting and storing home grown food, making bread, cooking with home grown food, cooking on a Stanley range, and many other skills can all be learnt here at different times of year. We host educational visits at the farm and work with young people on life skills. We have several renewable energy projects to work on throughout the year in between farm work. We need to reconstruct our home made wind turbine; install the nearly finished home made solar water heating panel and possibly remake the heat exchanger. When working as a farmhand here you will live in our shepherd's shack or woodland yurt (see pictures below). Meals in the farmhouse kitchen are mostly made from our own produce and we eat all together as a family. We are not vegetarians but primarily only eat meat from our own animals/ neighbouring farms. There is NO SMOKING anywhere on the farm. We have Internet access and a friendly local pub within walking distance. We are looking for lively minds with good practical skills, a willingness to learn and help us to achieve our aim for excellence at our farm and study centre. Aside from the farm work, we have some amazing local sports facilities and terrain for: - mountain biking - enduro and downhill - fell running - Cheerleading - Outstanding local jujitsu club - Hiking - Wild camping - In the summer we have outdoor yoga in the walled garden at the farm (often - but not always - free to workawayers) The types of people who come to us include: - Vet students for practical animal handling experience - Physiology students for experience with sensory visits for the disabled - Those wishing to up their gardening knowledge - People planning to be teachers - a chance to help with school visits at the farm - People planning to be outdoor instructors - we do fieldwork with school groups which gives the opportunity to work with students in an outdoor environment.
Area: AndaluciaDutch child psychologist/Mindfulness trainer and urban sketcher/painter, living in the Granada area, 20 minutes from the sea. I live on a rather remote piece of land where I am trying to grow (unusual) foodplants and flowers. I also give English lessons (TEFL), as I am only starting to try and work in my own field in Spain. For me 'work away' has been about meeting people, making friends, trying to balance between giving and receiving. If you feel happy helping with working in the garden or general maintenance, or even building, I try to give back by cooking good meals, providing English tuition for whomever would like that, give Mindfulness training or give a sketching workshop. You would work four hours daily and take two days off weekly. Of course you can arrange those hours and free days around to fit in with plans for small trips. All you have to do is communicate about it.
Area: Tahmoor New South Wales 90k from SydneyHi, We live in a house that is nearly 200 years old and when we purchased it the garden was very neglected, house still needs work too. We need a hand to get the place looking good. We currently need help with painting, gardening and rebuilding a deck. By Australian standards it is an historic old home and we would like to do the setting justice. We have recently retired and we need a hand in the 1 acre garden and round the house inside and out to get it the way we would like. We try to make your time here fun with trips to a local animal sanctuary and the occasional weekend down the south coast.
