Volunteer in Piha Beach, New Zealand. Great for surfers.
Country: New Zealand
Last Activity: 05/02/2012
Description
We run a small accommodation business at the great surf beach of Piha on the West coast of Auckland. We have hosted many young travelers from all around the world in our work for accommodation scheme. We are two women and welcome all clean living people to our workaway scheme. No drugs or big drinkers please. Over the summer, we prefer our workawayers to stay at least two months as it is very busy and usually they dont want to leave anyway!
Area
Piha, Waitakere, Auckland
Type of work
Language practise,Helping with Tourists,
Help in the house,
Help with Eco project,
General Maintenance,
Cooking / shopping,
Building,
Gardening
Work
3-4 hours work each around our property per day (sometimes more if we have weddings). It can be clearing the garden (sometimes heavy loads), weeding, cleaning house, tidying up after us, cleaning windows, repairing things, painting - just general stuff. etc. When guests leave, you have to make up the suites i.e. bed, cleaning suites etc. We are particularly interested in good housekeepers, handyman types and strong gardeners at the moment. You must be thorough and quick and take the initiative…no slackers. Since we are in the best surf beach in NZ we get lots of surfers and trampers who spend most of the time in the water or in the bush. Couples are great for us as they keep each other company. We dont want single people to get lonely and we dont want them bringing people home with them! If you are a nightclub, bar hopper etc, you would get bored in Piha, but if you love the outdoors and beach and popping in to the city now and then, you will love it here. There are 3 clubs where you can have a cheap drink, get to know the locals and other young people and have a cheap meal and the Cafe is open until 7 and is fantastic and busy.
Languages spoken
English and a little French
Accommodation
A cute little hut with a Queen bed (we can only do 1person or a couple at a time). Fridge, bench top oven, kettle, table etc. Not the Hilton, but comfortable and a bit like camping :)
What else ...
Great for surfers, but we do expect a good 3-4 hours work each a day . People who are independent although friendly and can hold a good conversation when needed. Our volunteers love it here. We have had wonderful helpers from France, Uk, USA and Italy who were quick to realise what needed to be done and used initiative. Its sort of camping, but not really! You can run down and check the surf half a minute away and if its no good go exploring etc. In summer, good housekeeping skills are essential. You must be prepared to get hot and dirty and not be afraid of working in the bush which we are tidying up or to paint(this summer you will be painting the roof), clean the suites etc. and generally take the initiative to help us keep organized – or get us organized around the property!. Good English is quite important because during the summer we are too busy to have to explain everything several times. It’s a give and take situation really – sometimes if we have a wedding or event you might have to work longer, but we make it up to you one way or another. You do your own cooking although we sometimes invite you for dinner. But most important to us are intiative, willingness, ability, fun, outgoing, (chef would be nice :)), strong, not afraid of getting down and dirty and quick. In summer, up to the end of March, we have quite a few weddings and our helpers work as waiters etc for them. If you can help me with the catering then that is a bonus for us!!!

Mike is unbelieveable. We miss him and wish he could have stayed forever. If he applies for your place, grab him. He is wonderful. Very intelligent, interesting, funny, strong, can fix anything, do anything, capable, very tidy and guess what....a great cook!
I had a great time at the lodge, Julia & Bobbie are wonderful, always ready to help you and teach you something more about the kiwi culture, each one from a different point of view. I suggest everybody to spend some time in their lovely paradise in Piha.
This is a great place to stay. You have many time to see all the nice places there, and you have a lot of activities to do. I was there for a month and enjoyed it really. Julia helps you all the time with your english, which is very helpful. When you are not in the high season there, it's nice quit.
Thank you very much for all dear Julia and more
