Volunteer in Rural Bulgaria
Description
We are a lively and sociable couple who have lived in Bulgaria for 4 years now after emigrating from the UK.
We have a 5 acre plot of land that needs work and can offer accommodation to volunteers in a 2 bed roomed self contained bungalow. Or in our own home.
Currently we have 2 horses, a donkey, 6 dogs, chickens and a cat, plus we do breed pigs and raise them for the table.
We need help with some small building and maintenance projects, gardening (organically), tree pruning and animal care etc. During some summer months we could do with some help to harvest produce from the garden and also for haymaking etc.
Ideally you would like horses and be able to ride as we have 2 mares that need a confident and kind rider to help with their education.
There's also some decorating in the house and outside tidy up or prettifying jobs to do. We are not artistic but would love it if you wanted to do some artwork here.
We can offer archery lessons (traditional english long bows), have a small plunge pool for use in the summer months and hope to have a sauna installed for the cooler months. Please note archery will only be available if we have the time.
We enjoy a fairly healthy diet, a good laugh and the occasional beer with wonderful home cooked and produced food. Would you like to learn more about cooking or rural living while helping us a few hours a day in return for board and lodging? I love to cook and try new recipes, we also make jams and preserve foods and brew rakia (Bulgarian Brandy).
Please note that we are smokers and eat meat.
We would prefer volunteers who are able to work on their own initiative and do not need constant supervision.
Currently we are looking for motivated, enthusiastic people to come and help with animal care, fencing, building a road and some land clearance. We have lots of plans this year and also hope to build a new pig house and pen, shelter for the horses and who knows what else! Your input, ideas and experiences are welcomed as we try to become more self sufficient and ecologically friendly.
Please note we do NOT supply alcohol/tobacco products or luxury items but you may bring/supply your own.

Nick and Dee are fantastic to have around. Hardworking, motivated, energetic and always laughing. They both bring experience and intelligence with them and can turn their hands to anything. We've learned a lot about natural building methods, picked their brains for ideas and enjoyed every minute. Their organisation skills are great, they have more
Allison is a lovely, kind, polite and hardworking lady. She's happy to try anything and gets along well with everyone. Much fun to be around, enthusiastic and energetic and a great help with any job.
We've loved having Allison to stay with us and hope the rest of her travels are enjoyable. Come back anytime. Love Suzy, David and all of the animals more

These 2 ladies are absolute stars. Extremely helpful, polite and great fun. They will try anything, are very enthusiastic and have heaps of energy. We've loved having them stay and will be sad to see them leave, but hope that they enjoy the rest of their travels. Joanna & Cheryl are welcome anytime here, all the best love Suzy, David and all of more
We had Tara & James here for just over a week and thoroughly enjoyed their company. They were great help and definitely didn't mind mucking in (or mucking out) and got on with any jobs they were asked to do despite the weather being awful for a few days. We hope they both enjoy the rest of their travelling and fulfill all of their ambitions.
This reference is too long overdue. Suzy and David were a home away from home in Bulgaria. We were so spoiled every night with delicious homemade cooking -- curry, veggie rost, Yorkshire pudding, even vegetarian scotch eggs for Tara! It was wonderful to meet some of the other expats, share in on market day, swap stories, make wine in the living more
