Help with land and horses in Portugal
Country: Portugal
Last Activity: 15/11/2011
Description
We are running a smallholding in the Southern reaches of the Alentejo. It is a dry climate with poor soil and depopulation, in an relatively remote area of Ecological reserve. Our house consists of guest accommodation (self catering) and our rooms, fields for the horses and a barn.
Our aim is to improve the area as much as possible and maintain the house and gardens to a high standard. We are also interested in eco-projects, such as using recycling and natural products to work the land.

Work
We are seeking workawayers who want to work outdoors and who are fit and willing to tackle sometimes, (but not always!) heavy work. It would be a great advantage if you could also ride a horse to a good standard. Workawayers have to be flexible, so to take advantage of the good weather, sometimes the days are longer than at other host sites. Working with animals means that there are few 'days off'.
There is some opportunity for language practise (English and Portuguese), but Portuguese only when we visit the towns, about 2-3 times a week. Otherwise, we are in the heart of rural Portugal, remote and very beautiful.
In 2011, we are looking for a couple to assist us in April and in May. Either two weeks period, or one longer one! Those with building skills/experience and/or experienced riders are encouraged to apply.
Workers are needed in the cooler months especially, so if you think this is for you, please get in touch and we look forward to hearing from you. Please note that when the workload is light in the warmer weather, we offer self-catering for workawayers, so you will have more free time and opportunity to explore or simply enjoy, the area.

Accommodation
You will have your own room, in our house. Or if a couple, there is a possibility of using the apartment.
What else ...
During Spring 2011, we hope to build a field shelter for the horses and improve the gardens of the house. Therefore expertise in construction (wood and cement) and working with stone would be a distinct requirement.

Tony is easy to work with and good with people. He is very hard-working and likes to stick at a task until it is completed. He is careful and thoughtful with his work. He has built fencing and dismantled wooden structures as well as being excellent with our three horses - he was quiet, gentle with them and diligent in caring for them. He is more
Sam is hardworking and likes to do a good job! She is reliable and self motivated. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting her! She is sympathetic to animals and very adaptable. Her cleaning skills are legendary and I would recommend her to anyone! She is also welcome back here if she wants to do some more!! Enjoy your travelling Sam!! Ruth
Bob was strong and could cope with heavy work associated with the land where we live. He completed all the tasks asked of him on each day he worked. These included barrowing stones for a wall, helping to put up a pool and shade and various gardening jobs. Overall, his work was good. He is a quiet person. He did leave suddenly though, after more
