Description

An established rare plants garden on 3 acres, raising unusual flowering and edible plants using organic methods. Permaculture area under development.

I took the garden on over four years ago now, as an alternative to commuting, so it is still very much under development. The main house had already been modernised, and I am now just starting to work on the original stone buildings.

Quiet but not too remote - walking distance to the pub and bus; and help given with arranging side trips. Excellent hillwalking & coast walks.

Travail

Winter/Spring projects :

Outside: planting trees and fruit bushes, including ash and alder for coppicing; thinning and pruning.

Inside: helping with insulation, painting, etc to bring a stone barn back to life.

Spring/Summer 2012
Cultivation of food crops using organic methods, propagation of permaculture crops. Saving turf [peat] for winter fuel, external painting, continuation of work on barn renovation.

For garden work, a commitment to sustainable growing is more important than experience, as I teach organic gardening. For the work on the barn, carpentry skills could be helpful.

Lots to learn about managing crops organically, plant propagation, mulches & green manures, etc. And just preparing for permaculture plantings around the pond. (See photo album)

Logement

Long attic room, can accommodate two people, and has its own entrance. Food is home-grown or localy sourced, where possible, and mostly from organic ingredients. Vegetable-based cooking, though not always strictly vegetarian. home-baked bread. Vegan cooking? Possible, with a bit of help. The only animals so far are two shy long-haired cats. (They don't have access to the attic.)

Autres choses...

The garden is in a sheltered valley within walking distance of pub, shurch, bus stop. But also close to the lakes and mountains of the North Mayo wilderness area, with the Atlantic coast beyond.

There are great opportunities for wild hill and coastal walking, as well as cycle routes and local walking routes. For wet weather, the National Museum of Folk Life is a few minutes' drive, and there are a couple of small museums locally. Arts Centre events, films and music sessions in two nearby towns.

Public transport to Westport Galway and Dublin (several trains or buses a day) is 10 minutes' drive - lifts availble, naturally.
