Area: Rio Dulce, Izabal, GuatemalaHello and Welcome to our profile. *** UPDATE - February 2014 *** Our project is currently undergoing some changes, and we ask that anyone who is interested in volunteering to check back in the future for any new crew positions. We will post here when we are ready to accept new volunteers, THANKS! and Happy Travels! Thank You so much for your interest in helping out*** Main Posting: We are looking for some work exchange volunteers interested in helping out with the restoration of a 52' Polynesian Catamaran located along a beautiful, tropical river/lake on the Caribbean side of Guatemala. Poco A Poco is seeking fun, creative and skilled volunteers who play nice with others and have a genuine belief that the best part of living is giving. You can come to just work on boat related projects, a specific project we have going within the community or a combination of both. In any case we are looking for people who can commit for at least 3 weeks… but, we are flexible in this as well, so if you have 2 weeks and 4 days available and you can offer what we are looking for in that time frame, let’s talk. In exchange for your time, ideas and efforts we provide a comfortable place to sleep, most meals (minus alcoholic beverages) and frequently, FUN! We like to regularly take our volunteers to some of the local attractions (see photo pages) for a little recreation and sight seeing. Or just stay in the community to swim in the lake, play football (soccer) with the kids, explore the river, kayak the shoreline or swing in a hammock… basically, we like to make sure our volunteers really do enjoy their time with us, we realize that without them, our projects would be much harder to accomplish. The ultimate goal is to finish making Poco A Poco into a safe, blue water sailor and then guide her around the planet, visiting remote and less-developed coastal communities to provide whatever asked-for-assistance that is within her and her crews capacity to provide... basically, Poco A Poco and her crew want to conscientiously travel the globe sharing and helping out in any meaningful way they can. The first task though, is to get her ready for such a voyage. Thanks for looking and Have a Wonderful Day!
Area: Washington StateAt age 50, I bought this land. It was a “rode hard and put away wet” decommissioned orchard. My 70 year-old friend, Betsy, and I began to transform the rubble into an oasis of health. WWOOFers and others came on board a few years later energizing the land with their sweat. This 7th year of transformation boasts production of hay, pasture-raised grass-fed beef, lamb, and chicken—all planted and raised as organically pure as possible; I’ve no intention of jumping "organic" labeling hoops. I oppose the ingestion of herbicides, pesticides, hormones or antibiotic additives and mindfully avoid GMO Frankenfoods. I grow most of our food and feed. Most people come here to learn about “sustainable” farming. From the standpoint of this being a closed-loop system, it’s almost sustainable. The animals provide nitrogen-rich “fertilizer” – though in quantities insufficient to eliminate the need for commercial fertilizer. Those who came before beat the land like a slave; it takes much longer to restore a body than to run her down. “Sustainable” would imply there is not a constant drain on financial resources. It is on this level the ranch falls far short of the goal. Perhaps we could meet that goal if I grew a high-dollar crop with low infrastructure and labor needs that produced sufficient yields. It cannot be done with hay, cattle, lamb and chicken. Seeing the writing on the wall, in 2012 I shifted my focus from trying to build sustainability from the land to building sustainability for the land.
Area: FloridaI am a divorced business owner that owns an incredible lakefront home in the Ocala National Forest. I also own my business property ( a photography studio) and a rental mobile home. It's a beautiful part of Florida close to many crystal clear rivers and springs. Only a little over an hour to the beach. I discovered Workaway about a year ago and have been dreaming of the day when I can be free of my responsibilities (mortgage payments) and travel the world helping others. I have 40 plus adventures I want to volunteer for in my host list. In order to do that, I need to fix up my properties and get them in shape to be sold. I'm looking for some help in doing this. I love to show the area and experience it through the eyes of those who are seeing it for the first time. Lots of canoeing, kayaking, swimming. I could take you somewhere one day per week - other than that you would need your own transportation or can hang out on the beautiful lake.
