Description
Hi,
We are two crazy (but friendly) metalheads who love HeavyMetal-Open-Air-festivals (we were at Wacken OA in 2009/10/11 - amazing!): Alexandra and Jan ( 32, 32), and we are living on the countryside about 120 km north-east from Berlin. We are living together with our dog Lara, 3 cats, chickens and baby chickens, ducks and ducklings, 5 sheep (3 grown ups, 2 lambs born in early May last year, the 3rd lamb we had for barbecue on the 1st of October for our wedding party, and the other 2 were converted into Schnitzel and Bacon in February :-), and 12 rabbits on an old farming site, we have a garden for growing vegetables and fruits, and we have a lot of work with our old house (nearly 100 years old). We have been living here since July 2009, and there is still a lot to do..
We love preparing organic food with fruits and vegetables from our own garden, we are baking bread by ourselves, and self sufficiency is our big dream :-)
Jan is an artisan, and I am a biologist.
Before we bought the farm, we spent some time in Tromsoe, Northern Norway, where we also met each other there in 2006 while both doing an Erasmus exchange semester. Alex went back to Tromsoe for her bachelor thesis in 2007 for 7 months, and in 2008 we both spent another 9 months up there- Alex for doing her master thesis, and Jan for working as a guide for tourists. Jan is fluent in Norwegian.
Especially Alex loves travelling a lot (did a backpackertour through Vietnam in 2005 on her own), and after her degree in biology the plan was either to travel around the world for one year with Jan or to search for a nice place on the countryside to live. Well, then the farm crossed our way and we lost our hearts :-D
Back to the present on the farm: We have eggs from our own chicken, we are no vegetarians, but don't eat much meat. And if doing so, it is organic meat or meat from our own animals (chickens, ducks, rabbits, sheep).
We have had 33 ducks here during the last summer, and 28 we slaughtered in early December for selling them to friends and family, and some we kept for our own purposes ;-)
As you can see, some parts of the house are still building sites, but some rooms are quite cosy yet- the bathroom, the living room and the kitchen have all cockle stoves, so that it becomes pretty warm during the wintertime...
Well, I think the most important fact you should know is that we are living in the middle of nowhere :-D
We have 2 permanent neighbours in 2 houses, Günther is 84 and Waltraud is 75 years old. The other house in the road belongs to a very nice polish family, but they are still living in a flat in Stettin, as the house isn`t renovated at all (no water, no toilet etc.).
Around our house there is nothing but fields, and one tiny road that goes to Penkun, the town with 2000 inhabitants our place belongs to. Penkun has a pharmacy, a tiny grocery store, a bakery and a doctor. That's it.
We buy our milk at the farmers place in the next village, 1 km from here.
We are living pretty basic (I think you have seen the pictures on our profile), and since September 2010 we even have been having a water toilet, hurray!!! Before we were using a compost toilet...But now it`s much more comfortable :-)
We have a dog, Lara, she belongs to our family, is sleeping in the corridor at night and sometimes cuddling up with us on the sofa, so you shouldn't be allergic to dog's hairs...
Jan is very good in repairing and building, and there's much stuff left to do in and around the house, so we are looking for somebody that can help him with that.
We have been living here for 3 years now, and still living on a building site sometimes it is a bit hard...especially Alex struggles a lot with pretty often not being able to see all the positive things we have already done here , but just the stuff that is still laying around waiting to be done ;-)
That`s why we are enjoying the company of our volunteers so much: they have been all so positive and were really glad that they could have a hand in the whole process here. They even showed us that there`s more than work, work and even more work, building sites and hard dirt on our small farm :-D
We have been having 22(!) workawayers now in total since November 2010 (that`s amazing, still can`t believe this!!), so I would say we are experienced hosts now ;-)
So that was the most important stuff....besides, Jan could need some help in creating his website as he is planning to work as a freelancer, but this is not that urgent right now ;-)

We have 4 caravans for visitors standing in our garden - and we would love to have some helping hands here. We offer free accommodation, lots of home-made food and fun!
We really live out in the sticks, so it's perfect if you are not looking for any pubs or shops around the corner. The work can be dirty, only wear things you don't mind getting wrecked ;-)
We always need help with the normal housekeeping, such as cooking, cleaning, feeding the animals, heating the stoves, chopping wood, walking the dog, tidying up, cleaning the stable...
A nice project for the winter will be to finish the bathroom (painting, grouting etc), and maybe fettling the walls...
Besides, the repair shop needs to be tidied up desperately, there`s some hard work waiting to be done in the basement (still full of rubbish and hard dirt- we got this as a gift when we bought the house. Thanks....).
For the summer there will be lots of gardening, harvesting fruits and vegetables, making hay, finishing the outer insulation of the house, painting the roof of the 3rd caravan, building a bathroom for guests in a compartment of the stable and much more..
It would be nice if you could stay with us for 2-3 weeks, or even much longer if we like each other ;-)
Of course it is great if you bring skills like building , using tools like electrical saws etc, experiences with carpentry or any other type of mechanical art, but it is NOT mandatory at all!
Basically, Jan can teach you everything you need to know...
We had an australian girl living with us for some weeks who was great in sewing and repairing clothes, she also taught me (Alex) how to felt (with the wool from our own sheep), another girl was cooking and baking all the time during her stay, the next one was great in organizing chaotic rooms :-D
So everyone has a talent, don`t be shy, just contact us!
I (Alex) am still hoping to have somebody joining us one day who has some skills in teaching Yoga, knowledge in traditional chinese medicine or massage ;-)
!! But please notice:
it is mandatory that you are able to work independently. It is no problem for us to explain things in detail, even twice, but you shouldn`t have "2 left hands", you should be able to cook basic meals so that we can take it in turns with preparing the meals.
It will be beneficial if you have your own housekeeping, and in case you still live at your parent`s house you should be used to help there with the daily duties and not living in "hotel mama".
If this may sound a bit strange to you: we just mention this so clearly as we recently made some bad experiences concerning those things.
Hope to see you soon, Alexandra and Jan

Andres put a lot of thought into his work and came up with good ideas. He was working really hard and he was nice company. We enjoyed having him.
All thumbs up!
All thumbs up!
It was great to have them both on our farm. They are nice company and hard workers. They came to bild a clay bread-baking oven and did a wonderful job. It still needs to dry, but I´ll put a note here after the first breads. I highly recomend them as volunteers! They worked self-contained and learn quickly. They are grown up enough to fullfill all more
Alex and Jan are great hosts! They are kind and very generous and will give you a very memorable stay. We loved their small holding with all the animals (and the new baby lambs!), fresh eggs from the chickens and their wonderful dog Lara who we miss terribly. We had a comfy, cosy caravan to stay in and they had a big kitchen where we all cooked more
During my very first work-away-stay I had a great time at the home of Alex and Jan. I stayed for eight weeks during bitterly cold February and March – quite an adventure. But the caravan was always cosy and warm.
I learned interesting things like felting, building, painting, plucking a rooster, tending the sheep, feeding the rabbits, handling more

Carmen is an excellent Worky! She is nice company, puts a lot of efford and thought into her tasks and works independently. We liked her cooking (Schinken!!!) and building skills (she built a shed for us single-handed).
She is pretty much an allrounder we highly recommend her and would happily welcome her here again.

Thank you so much for this incredible experience. Alex and Jan are two wonderful hosts. I stayed with them 3,5 weeks and, when I left, I regretted it straight after! There are many tasks to choose from, and no one is forced to do something; In addition Alex and Jan are always present, ready to help and assist you with everything you need. The more
Greta is a excellent workawayer, she was always eager to finish her tasks. She was a great help in the garden and her italien cooking was delicious - not to mention the tiramisu.
We´re looking forward to seeing her again soon.
Until then we wish her all the best.

Safia and Ieuan have been helping out here for one week. We liked their company, their sense of humour, and they were really good with the animals, including our dog Lara. They also did a great job in the garden and the basement- thanks a lot! We wish you both all the best for the future :-)
Alex and Jan are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They were immediately welcoming and really great when Ieuan was ill, making sure we had lots of blankets, medicines and camomile tea (-: They are definitely experienced hosts and know how to keep a relaxed atmosphere, even with 7 people around the table. We wish them all the best.
....Ella, we miss you!
Ella spent 2,5 weeks here with us, and it was a pleasure to have her here...she did a great job with the daily work with the animals, painting walls and shutters, doing some hard work with tidying up the basement, repairing tons of broken clothes we piled up here, teaching me (Alex) felting, cooking delicious vegetarian more

I had a great time staying out at the farm! For my first workaway experience especially it was good - definitely encouraging to do more. Even with one night being -22 degrees I still felt comfortable, and the food felt healthy too (and tasty). Jan's wine was also really nice. Teaching how to felt was fun, and I now have some cozy arm-warmers made more
Staying on the farm in Kirchenfeld was a great experience for us. Great homemade food, wine, company and warmth. The caravans are great and sooo homely! The work was challenging, yet rewarding and it's great to be able to look at what we did and see we made a difference. Including Alex and Jan, we also made great friends with their friends Sabine more
It was really really great to have Alex & Morgan here- they are both open minded, easy going, always in a good mood, great cookers, hard workers...and really brave in learning new things- they even slaughtered a chicken and a duck! It`s a pity that we had just 1,5 weeks together, and we really hope to meet you again! THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!
...if there were 5 smilies to give, Jarrad would have deserved them!! Actually I don`t know where to start....first, Jarrad helped out in an emergency situation, as Jan has been at hospital for nearly 5 weeks now, and I was alone with the farm, the animals, and all the stuff that REALLY had to be fixed before winter. Jarrad was building fences, a more
Abby and Vic did a great job here, altough it became pretty cold just before they arrived. Besides, we had lots of fun driving through poland and searching for a sightseeing place in the middle of a forest :-D
Yan and Alex were amazing to stay with. They are very kind people who care about your stay and make sure you are very comfortable. They have such a great set up for workawayers and are working to improve that currently by adding a separate full bathroom and kitchen for their guests. I actually was able to help this process by laying concrete for more
First of all: it was a pleasure to have Matt here staying with us!
He is a hard and dedicated worker, open minded, flexible...we had a lot of fun with him, and he helped us a lot with different building projects. So Matt, I really hope that you will come back next year!!

Mirja and her boyfriend Micha have been with us for 2 weeks, and they were amazing. They were working like crazy, they were able to do work on their own, and they did simply everything.
Sawing and chopping wood, garderning, walking the dog, cooking, feeding the animals, harvesting fruits- simply EVERTHING!
So whenever you have the opportunity to more

Attila is a great worker an a funny person- what a pity that he stayed for only 8 days! He was a great help with building, and he fixed our computer- good job!! Hope to see you again :-)
Shannon has been volunteering with us for 3 weeks, and we had a great time with her! She was working really hard and cooking fantastic (I got a bit fat from eating warm dishes and cupcakes wth tons of frosting all the time..).
Shannon is a quick learner, and she did every work that was available: building, cleaing stables, walking the dog, more

Jan and Alex are great people and I enjoyed working with them everyday. I learned a lot, and I especially appreciated their patients as they taught some basic German. :D They also gave me to opportunity to paint a caravan and attempt to do some some welding. The atmosphere at their home was very welcoming. And, I hope to return next summer. :)
If there were 5 smilies, we would give them to Thomas :-D
Thomas has been volunteering with us for 2 weeks, he did a great job and we had lots of fun with him. He did lots of building with Jan, but also a fantastic job with gardening, feeding the animals, walking the dog.....He is a hard worker, quick learner, and last but not least, he painted more

Kanan has been here for 3 weeks, and we had a great time. She is a very quick learner, a hard worker (even a whole day of soil digging is no problem for her..!), a very open and open minded person, and in her behaviour she is much older than 19 ;-)
I can warmly recommend Kanan as a volunteer, and we hope to meet her again!

Alex and Jan were terrific! They asked me if there was anything they could improve on as hosts and I couldn't say anything, because there really isn't anything that I can think of. They were very welcoming and the area they live is gorgeous. Their english is great and they helped me learn a bit of German. Every day was an adventure =].
Thanks for more

Sachi has been here for 5 !/2 weeks during christmas and New Years Eve, and we had a great time with her. She is hard working and was soon a part of our family. We had some deliciuos Japanese dishs and a great help in the house, on the yard and with the animals. We are quite sad that she will leave tomorrow towards her next hosts in Denmark, but more
