Wildlife, the outdoors, great views and good food, Australia
Description
If you love wildlife, the outdoors, great views and good food, send us an email. No smokers or vegetarians thank you. Check out our site at ironbarkgrange.com.au and the blog on this site which has a few videos of what we are about.
Please note: WE DO NOT TAKE SMOKERS OR VEGETARIANS.
The property is located 60km South of Brisbane and 20km West of the Gold Coast on the upper North slope of Mt Tamborine, 320m above sea level. We are surrounded by National Parks and abundant wildlife. The property is 8.35Ha with a sub-tropical climate and has great country views to the North up to 120km on a clear day.
We also have a tennis court, an outdoor cobb pizza oven, chooks/geese, two dalmatian dogs, a vegetable garden and about 300 fruit trees. Work outside is a major part of what we do so expect to be outside on a rural property as part of the experience.
The design of the property has been along Permaculture principles. This includes rainwater collection, composting waste disposal, integration of animals and gardens, integrated pest management and the use of limited chemicals is done in a sustainable manner.
The house is designed and built by ourselves. It is large and modern and has been constructed using high mass walls and floors, good insulation in the roof, walls and double glazing throughout. Careful attention has been paid to window shading to minimise solar gain in summer and allow some heating in Winter.
We transport our helpers on their day off to Tamborine mountain (a major tourist attraction) or the nearest transport centre so that they can expore the area. Wireless and hard wire internet is made available to all our helpers.
We pick up our helpers from the Beenleigh Bus Transit Centre, under the big roof of the centre. This is in Beenleigh, approximately 25km South of Brisbane and is next to the Beenleigh Train station.
We love lamb roasts, cuisine from different lands and good wine. Come and share the experience with us.

Work
We have had about 350 working guests on the property and the family has enjoyed the cultural exchange of food and ideas. We ask our guest helpers to work 6 days a week for 5-6 hours a day. The work is varied and includes things such as: construction work, wood working, harvesting, weeding, brush cutting, painting, planting, cleaning and cooking. We usually work early in the morning and late in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day.
No smokers or vegetarians thank you. (If you are a smoker you will be asked to leave!) We prefer our helpers to stay 2 weeks or more. Work outside is a major part of what we do so expect to be outside on a rural property as part of the experience.

Alexis was great to have staying with us. Lots of laughs, work competently completed and a great attitude. What more could you want from a workawayer, except a longer stay. Thanks Alexis and hope to see you on Thursday for our cheese making day.
Wow! Where to begin! I stayed here for 6 weeks and had the most incredible experience. From the moment I arrived the view took my breath away and once I met the van Velzen family the place felt like home. Peter has transformed this property from an empty piece of land into a haven of native trees and plants. Everyday there was a new task so you more
Jennifer was wonderful to have around. Probably the most cheerful helper we have had and we have had over 400!! Great in the kitchen and was a mother to all our other helpers and they loved it. Grab her and don't let her go. All her work here was done cheerfully and well. Thanks Jen and good luck in WA.
We loved having Jesse with us. A very easy guy to have around, intelligent and great work ethic. A wide range of farm jobs were completed with enthusiasm and a great sense of humor. Grab him if you can, you won't be disappointed. Hope you have the time to stay with us again. Bon voyage my friend.

I stayed at here for a month and had a truly, super awesome time. Within 20 minutes of arrival I felt welcome and at home. The property is remarkable. Built and designed by Peter himself, there is a story of innovation behind every contour and pipe in the property. The orchard is beautiful and the herb garden is not only totally awesome, but more

Staying and working at this property was one of the best experiences I ever had. No wonder that I extended from 2 weeks to 2 months!!!! I really miss the family, the dogs, the food and the other helpers. I could learn so many different skills like cheese making, dancing Salsa (Peter is the best Salsa dancer ever!!!!), playing tennis, wood working more
Carina was a delight to have stay and work with us. The fun didn't stop with all activities she was involved in. She was will and enthusiastic to get involved in many new and challenging activities and we were impressed with her great attitude. We miss you heaps.
Wonderful place to stay. Peter, Ann and Zoe are making you feel part of the family. We enjoyed every day of our stay. Did a lot of new things like wood cutting, spraying.. but what we enjoyed the most was preparing dinner, having dinner together and watching Masterchef! Thanks for everything! :) The Dutchies!
Nanneke and Riccardo were wonderful helpers. If you are after a friendly and competent couple look no further. Their love of life and in our home, food they prepared, made their stay with us really great. Both were excellent workers around the property. We will miss them and wish them the best for the future.
This place is amazing. I stayed for one month and wished it could've been longer. Every part of the property has some story behind it, some memory or lesson learned. Every day is one of exploration whether it be with the land, with your eyes your nose or your taste buds. I've learned about cooking, cutting wood and trees, gardening, cheese making, more
No show. No explanation.
We stayed with this host for a little over two weeks and had an amazing time. They treated us like part of their family, we had great accommodation and incredible food. We learned many new skills like gardening, cheese-making and even salsa dancing!! I would strongly recommend this host to any workawayer who is eager to learn new things and enjoys more
Lauren and Robbie were wonderful guest/helpers on our property. They truly are warm and genuine and were a delight to have in our home. Enthusiasum and an desire to explore new skills are a major part of their characters and I unreservedly recommend them. If you get a chance ask them to demonstrate their newly acquired salsa skills.
