    Description

We are looking for volunteers during the months of April, May, September and October.

We are a family of three (plus three cats, a dog and chickens) who bought an off-grid property here in Catalonia, northern Spain in 2015. Our electricity needs come from a solar system, our water is via harvesting rainwater. We drainage grey water to two filter beds. We therefore have to be very aware of our resource usage, especially water as it doesn't rain here much in the summer. Also only eco cleaning and personal hygiene products can be used here so as to not contaminate the land and ground water.
We have worked our way through the main necessary renovations to the house. There are still some small improvement and maintenance jobs to complete.
We have a hectare of mountainside which is roughly terraced, parts of which we plant and utilising this for full food self sufficiency is our key focus. Basically we're working towards full self-sufficiency.
The whole plot is very rustic and semi-wild and even paths and steps are of rough and uneven stone, though people with normal fitness won't have any problem! Keeping our part of the mountainside maintained according to reducing forest fire risk and harvesting wood for our log fires is also a key task.
Having volunteers will help us to achieve our goal of sustainable self sufficiency.
Please note we don't allow smoking on site for health and safety reasons.

Being with us you could learn about what it means to live off-grid, what it's like to build a new life in another country. The local villagers are friendly and will help you learn Catalan. You could also practice your English of course, if it's a second language for you!

We live in a beautiful area, peaceful, but only five minutes walk from the local village where there is a bar/restaurant and a small (very part time) shop. I would be happy to drive you into the county town of Falset (Priorat) about 10km away where you can find anything you might need. We are about two hours from Barcelona by train, and our small halt station is about 2km away along a pretty country lane lined by fincas. We are also 30 minutes drive from the nearest beach and the Ebro Valley.
We live a pretty quiet life here, so loud music etc would not be welcomed. If you like peace and enjoying being out in nature you will fit in very well!
