Fun in Guatemala Building a Polynesian Catamaran with a Humanitarian Mission
Pays: Guatemala
Last Activity: 04.25.2012
Description
Hello and Welcome to our profile.
We are looking for some work exchange volunteers interested in helping out with the restoration of a 52' Polynesian Catamaran located along a beautiful, tropical river/lake on the Caribbean side of Guatemala.
Poco A Poco is seeking fun, creative and skilled volunteers who play nice with others and have a genuine belief that the best part of living is giving.
You can come to just work on boat related projects, a specific project we have going within the community or a combination of both. In any case we are looking for people who can commit for at least 3 weeks… but, we are flexible in this as well, so if you have 2 weeks and 4 days available and you can offer what we are looking for in that time frame, let’s talk.
In exchange for your time, ideas and efforts we provide a comfortable place to sleep, most meals (minus alcoholic beverages) and frequently, FUN!
We like to regularly take our volunteers to some of the local attractions (see photo pages) for a little recreation and sight seeing. Or just stay in the community to swim in the lake, play football (soccer) with the kids, explore the river, kayak the shoreline or swing in a hammock… basically, we like to make sure our volunteers really do enjoy their time with us, we realize that without them, our projects would be much harder to accomplish.
The ultimate goal is to finish making Poco A Poco into a safe, blue water sailor and then guide her around the planet, visiting remote and less-developed coastal communities to provide whatever asked-for-assistance that is within her and her crews capacity to provide... basically, Poco A Poco and her crew want to conscientiously travel the globe sharing and helping out in any meaningful way they can. The first task though, is to get her ready for such a voyage.
Thanks for looking and Have a Wonderful Day!
Currently and until further notice, Poco A Poco has all the crew that she needs. Please check back later in 2012 for any revised volunteer needs, Thank You for your interest!***

The work to be done ranges from basic boat maintenance to woodworking/ boat-carpentry, electrical and mechanical installations, welding, rigging, sewing, rope-work, painting, varnishing and probably some things not thought of yet.
Along with this work, there is likely a need within the nearby village for small exchange projects that can help improve lives.
Recent volunteers, in the last school year, initiated English and Art classes in the local primary school that have been a lot of fun. We plan to carry on where they left off for the 2012 school year and it would be great if we had some volunteers to help out with these subjects.
More ideas for projects within the community are health education, work skills training, agriculture projects, art/music projects for kids and/or other opportunities to exchange with folks that ask for a helping hand.
Of course there are plenty of other ideas on how Poco A Poco being in the community might be mutually beneficial that we are happy to discuss with you, or if you have any ideas you think might be appropriate, please contact us and we will talk about it.

The accommodations vary from staying aboard in your own space, a hammock between a couple trees, a tent or more conventional living facilities or potentially, a beach bungalow/hut. It would all depend on the potential crew members skill set and desired involvement in the project.

I worked with Biff for nearly two months and can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only did I make some strong friendships, some of which I know will last forever, but I was also overwhelmed by Biff's contagious desire to bring a little sunshine into anyone and everyone's lives. The world needs more people like this more
