Description

Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering with us. Your help
is essential if we are going to build a better future for the
children. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated and you will
have the satisfaction of knowing that you are having a great impact
upon the quality of their lives.

Since we established the orphanage in 2005, we have been able to offer
volunteering opportunities for anyone who would like to help. Because
of this we have been able to start the construction on a new orphanage which will eventually give a home to 24 children, currently we have 11 children in the orphanage. The volunteers working with the children will directly witness the results of their work as the children respond to their efforts, companionship and caring. Volunteering with OCEAN Nepal is also an excellent way to experience the unique Nepalese culture. You will not just see it but will actually live it!

Travail

A typical volunteer’s day might look like this:
1. Wake up at 7am
2. Have tea and then later breakfast with the children.
3. Help the children with some studies and to get ready for school.
4. Between 9 and 9:15am the children go to school. They are
finished about 4pm; therefore you will have 5 to 6 hours per day of
free time to do any sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley or to relax as
you wish.
5. After school is done you may want to walk home with the children
or meet them at the house. Once at home, the children will change out
of their uniforms, relax a little and then begin their homework.
6. We take a tea and biscuit break after school and then eat dinner
at about 7:30pm.
7. You then have the opportunity (your choice) to spend more time
with the children during their free time after dinner. Often this is
spent studying on school nights.

Your help with this is very, very valuable. On Fridays, games,
puzzles, books or a DVD is good fun.
They really appreciate playtime with adults and are a joy to be with.
The above program is flexible and applies for 6 days per week. You
have one day off (usually Sunday) from volunteering during the week.
Nepali children only have Saturdays off from school, during which most
volunteers like to take them on a day trip somewhere, be it the local
outdoor swimming pool or the zoo etc. We can provide you with plenty
of ideas for things to do and places to go with the children. Below
this paragraph I will give you some global information about
accommodation, travelling and costs.

*Accommodation:
Volunteers are most welcome to stay at the orphanage. This is the most
convenient option, limits your travel time/expense and here you can
participate fully with the children and “live their life”. Orphanage
conditions are quite basic but there is electricity and running water.
There is an indoor toilet and shower. Electrical outages do occur so a
reliable torch/flashlight is highly recommended. There is not heating
or air conditioning in the home so seasonally appropriate clothing is
required, especially for winter sleeping. For those who would like to
be more comfortable, there are several local Guest Houses at very
reasonable prices. If you choose the hotel option, we can provide
recommendations and make a booking for you in advance.

*How to get here?
The orphanage is in Balaju, Bohratar in Kathmandu. This is only 10
minutes by the regular bus to the popular Thamel district or 30
minutes by foot.
You can fly to Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu Nepal (TIA
KTM). It has good connections with many airlines including: Gulf,
Qartar, Etihad, Thai, Air India and many more. We will meet you at the
airport and drive you to the orphanage. Similar arrangements can be
made from the bus stop or train station if you are traveling by land
from India. Just give us your journey details and expected arrival
time and we will arrange it all and be waiting for you.

*How to make a reservation:
To book your place, please complete the following form and we will
get back to you with details and answers to any questions you might
have. If you travel with more persons, please fill out the form for
everyone.
