Volunteer. Conventional NZ Sheep and Beef/Cattle farm. Waitomo Caves
Country: New Zealand
Last Activity: 08/02/2012
Description
Bachelor (single male) farmer in Waitomo District, North Island in an old style basic home. In a quiet rustic valley, with views of farm-land, native bush (trees) and hills.
Commercial, Conventional Sheep(1000+) +lambs and Beef Cattle(100+) farm. 130 hectares.
Will pick-up in Piopio village 5 km, on SH3, bus stop, now 3 bus companies, some twice daily buses from Auckland (3-4 hours) and New Plymouth(1-2 hours).....30 km to Te Kuiti. 40 minutes to Waitomo Caves.
Must have respect for each others privacy but sociable and easy going. I enjoy conversation and learning of other countries and lives, helping in English, and a laugh. 2 cats (inside) and 2-3 working sheep/cattle dogs (outside).(allergies ??) Hay fever (grass pollen?) seems to occur for some particularly in November/December
An ale or wine or 2 is Ok at end of day, when cooking.
No smoking inside house, vechicles or buildings. Outside is OK.
No Drugs, inside or out.
Internet, e-mail, available for half an hour in the evening, not for Utube and videos.
Occasionally travel to sheep and cattle sales in nearby towns and to shops, and other activities and events in village 5km and nearby town 30km.
Bicycle and helmet available for use.
5 days minimum - prefer 2 weeks is better, or + as it allows enough time for a cycle of farm activity and life. You can ask for longer, and after a 5 day trial, can be negotiated for longer, depending on compatibility and bookings. You will find I am that I can be flexible, and amendable to getting to a longer term stay. Some on another scheme have stayed 3, 4-6 months+. Of course we did get along well and easy going.
Do Make contact, and with the estimated time and dates of staying, so I can send further information which will assist in figuring things out and then I can hold that time for you.
If you are already in NZ, sometimes (no promises) I can take one on short notice, Ok you might have to be quite helpful, dishes in the sink, and broom, mop and vacuum cleaner, and maybe necessary to put you in my other untidy spare room.

No skills are needed, just a good heart, although any expertise in certain niches, may well come in handy for a project (painting decorating, carpentering, building, fencing ? ? etc. ) ;- not to worry as I am flexible and find all my helpers are useful as they fit in with the flow of the farm and of course that is the main reason why you visit, and the sheep and cattle are my main priority.
Mustering, droving, dagging, shearing, docking, handling stock (sheep, cattle) etc.. Cleaning, painting, weed control, pruning, firewood, house help, building & repairs, general maintaince, handy with hammer and saw ? ?
I am looking for an average of 4-6 hours work a day, (mostly working along with me and assisting me in the general day to day flow of the farm) in return for accommodation and food, but I am flexible, as time off, if more busy on some days, cattle and sheep sales time in Te Kuiti,+ shops, road bicycle for exploring back country roads, and country scenery, rivers and reserves, or a quiet sun bathe, or view the stars and milky-way in the evening .
Rainy days, help me with computer? or so I may learn some new tips.Or clean house.

Please do have your profile filled out, and certainly something about yourself. Thank you.
No work visa required to stay on my farm. Usual government requirements for entry into NZ. Tourist visa (minimum funds per month) or work holiday visa.
Sorry, I do NOT write letters of introducton, sponsor-ship, guarantee or work etc, for immigration/visa purposes.
The first part of a journey, after the "imagining" and dreams is for you to start taking the small steps, as "the world is your oyster". Just get your self sorted and go for it.
a) It would be great if you have already checked out air fare return or round world ticket prices to New Zealand as the prices seem to be a major surprise to some. At those prices it is best to see if you are able to get visas for the longest stay that you can do.
b) To already have your passport.
c) Check out what visas you may need to arrive in NZ. Tourist visa or working holiday visa. Some countries/people have to apply before coming to NZ, and countries/people can just arrive so long as they already have a return or ongoing flight.
d) Also to have enough funds (x$) per month if on a tourist visa, more money you have then more months you can stay. It can be possible to extend your stay if again you can prove that you have enough funds (by not having spent much of your money)
e) Then make contact, with what you have found out, what steps you have started to do, what time frame you are thinking of.
Of course if you are already in NZ do make contact.
Traditional meals (Meat, gravy and vegetables), always accepting of help in food preparation and washing up and any culinary skills you may have.
Always appreciative of help in vaccuuming, broom and mop, particularly if your standards are higher than mine.
My house always seems to need a "spring clean" ( and admittedly I can be a little un-tidy ) and a tidy up seems to always be needed, but does not all have to done instantly, as it is farm-work and farm help that is a priority for me, and I am not a slave driver. A bit at a time is my motto, and it is always good when some cleaning has been done.
Limited Language is Ok so long as you have dictionary of at least 50,000 words, and a good heart to keep trying. Will assist, I speak slowly, wave hands, spell, picture and note paper, and finally smile and laugh. 3 key words "Wait" "Still"="Freeze" "OK"
People who are easy going, easy to please, happy with-in themselves and enjoy simple things in life.
To take a moment to enjoy listening to a lark singing, watch a hawk soar, or marvel at the Milky Way (stars)
As I take them them as I find them,
so take me as you find me.
Any questions, concerns or ideas please do ask.

William is a riot. If you're looking for a different experience, working on a farm is for you. His house sits on a great property surrounded by scenic preserves that we visited regularly. Plenty of good food and good company. William's a great teacher and a good guy to have a yarn with. Enjoy.
Gavin stayed on my farm for 3 weeks.
He fitted in with the flow of the farm, easy to please and helpful.
He was a great help for docking over a 1000 lambs, pushing sheep up for dagging, and at the end of the day would assist with food preparation and washing up.
We talked about many far ranging topics and he took an more

Lee stayed with me for 10 days in early January.
Summer is a busy time for me on the farm and even worse when I am behind. Lee ably assisted me with the sheep and lamb work, particularly being out in the hot sun over 5 days. Thank you. Also with droving cattle quietly

Julian helped on my farm for a week in early August with daily feeding out to cattle, gathering, chopping and stacking firewood, and patiently chasing sheep up to be dagged and at the end of the day helped with preparation of dinner.
He was an observant concientious lad, and so was quite helpful.

I meant to leave feedback here a while ago, but in any case, I had a wonderful time on William's farm and was sad to leave after two weeks full of new and interesting experiences.
The property is beautiful and provides for many adventures. Every day was different and I feel like I got to see and learn a lot in my short time in Piopio.
