    Jebale! Hi!

My name is Ken and I am the founder of a project in the rural village of Mayirinya, Eastern Uganda. Me and my family, we are focused on community development. Here we run a farm house and plot of 5 acres of land, which I decided to turn into a community-based solidarity project with the intention of helping our local community by providing varied crops, support, and education. Additionam priorities include sand, in turn, easy access to water and renewable energy. Empowerment through infrastructure is my passion.

I live on this community-centered farm, working with the locals, and I am trying to raise the funds required to turn our place into a small sustainable village that will support other communities. Our farm needs help. From planting to harvesting, and from weeding to construction. We always require extra hands, knowledge, and skills, especially in permaculture. The majority of our land still requires to be cultivated so there is a lot of work to be done!

As our project is now still at its very beginning and our long term goal is to be a sustainable farm that produces varied crops, we urgently need people who have experience or knowledge of:

    - farming, agriculture and permaculture who can pass their knowledge on to the locals and train them,

    - marketing/communication/fundraising in order to help us with our online content and attract donors,

    - up-cycling and DIYing, especially in waste recycling, to train the locals on how to make a living out of waste upcycling.

We promise you a fun and inspiring time. You will work among locals, get to know Ugandan culture and be rewarded by the purity of the local childrens’ smiles.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: if you come from Europe or the US we advise you to bring anti-malaria tablets with you. Malaria is certainly something one has to be aware of when travelling to Africa and should NOT be underestimated. We speak from experience and the most important thing for us is that you remain healthy.

You will get to know country life and learn Africa from the inside out. We are happy to teach you our language and cooking, and you may learn how mud huts are built. Our village is alive, night and day, so your cultural immersion is authentic. We believe that experience is the best teacher, and there is a lot you can learn here!

Our work schedule begins at 8:00A.M after breakfast and ends at 12:00P.M with a break between 10:30A.M - 11:00A.M. We would require you to work in the fields, prepare meals, help the staff to clean (and maybe upgrade) the farmhouse, organize training sessions with the locals, fundraise / help us with our social media and other communication channels. What we really like are ideas. Bring those and there is no end of change you can make.

    Alojamiento

Our farmhouse is 50km east from Jinja, near Nankoma, in the small village of Mayirinya. There is electicity thanks to a solar panel, but no running water. Our water is pumped manually from boreholes (however, there is a plan to install a solar pump). Bottled water is readily available for purchase in the village.

BEDS: single dorm beds, sheets and a few mosquito nets (bring your own if you want a DEET repellent one) are provided in the farmhouse. In case of a surplus of volunteers, we also have tents to house you – in which case we will warn you and ask you to bring a mat.

FOOD: our kitchen has 4 gas rings and pots and pans, we also use coal/charcoal stove for cooking and energy saving. We are able to provide you with vegetables and food from our farm and family house, normally corn meal, beans and sometimes rice. We always make sure we store food from our harvest season and vegetables available as we plant all year round and you will enjoy them during their harvest season. Otherwise we invite you to contact us concerning what is currently available on the farm and if you have any dishes or tradtional meals from your country, culture that you would love to share with us, any other ingredients you might need not available at home, you can find these in the market in Jinja or Nankoma) – but there are most ingredients available in local shops and even an evening market in Nankoma. We have great relationships with local producers of veg and fruit!

    Algo más...

We usually get around on bodabodas (motorbike taxis). In the next, bigger village there are public buses or matatus heading to Kampala and Jinja. Ken has a good knowledge of Uganda and has been almost everywhere, so if you are adventurous or looking for fun we are always keen to lend out our tents for weekends!

We can also help you organize your trips anywhere in the country. At all national parks and adventure places, we can be your guides. Let’s talk about it together :)
