Holi! (Nos podemos comunicar en Español tambien) 🇪🇸 🇵🇹 🇬🇧
My name is Alicia, officially I’m half-Spanish, half-English but for me home is in Portugal, where I grew up by the south-west coast. Fun fact about me, I was born on the 29th of February so I’m only 6 years old 🙃 I’ve been moving around between Portugal, Italy and Spain but currently based in Stockholm, where I’ve been living for the past four years.

🪚 My background is in product design, and I worked for some years in furniture/spatial design. I recently finished my studies in design focused on sustainable development, which is a field I’m very passionate about - circular design and sustainability. I am currently also studying experience design and working remotely in ux/ui for a nonprofit startup.

🗺️ 🎒 I am planning to start a long-term trip to Latin America in January, without a strict plan, but I'm aiming to live in places more than passing by as a tourist. I want to have the time to learn and get inspired by different cultures and surroundings but to also contribute and give something back to the communities I visit.

🧺 🫖🎍🪡 🔨 I am especially interested in learning crafts from different places and exploring natural materials and techniques, such as basketry and weaving with plant fibres, woodwork, bamboo crafts, pottery and ceramics, textiles and others.
About a year ago I had the chance to participate in a project where I learnt ancient craft techniques and developed pieces with artisans from my hometown in Portugal, using the native plant fibres. This was one of the most interesting projects I've done as a designer and has really stretched my interest in discovering and experimenting with craftsmanship. I aspire to learn about the local crafts techniques and materials as well as to connect and collaborate with native craftsmen and artisans from the places I visit.
📷 I am also looking forward to photography, video, branding, and digital design challenges!
I also have experience with social media management and content production, as well as web and graphic design.

🌱 I'm also very interested in learning about sustainable farming, composting, the local flora and fauna, building with local resources, cooking and food processes like of coffee roasting or fermentations.
I will be especially looking for work and experiences related to this topic, but I will also be looking for hostings not related at all (as I can work on those things in my free time too), such as hostels, and rural accommodations.

🍛 I love cooking and I'm super interested in learning about different cousins and local ingredients, cooking new dishes and sharing receipts. I try to follow a plant-based diet, but I’m flexible.

🧗‍♀️ I love outdoor activities, and generally up for new adventures!
To keep active I’m climbing, swimming, jogging and dancing! Also do yoga now and again and would like to start a more consistent routine. I used to surf when I was younger and have been wanting to rediscover the sport and try longboard!
🫧 I am open-minded, flexible and easily adaptable. I love music and all sorts of design and arts.
🔁 I’m interested and curious about up-cycling projects of all sorts. I’m also very interested in learning about natural and homemade cosmetics.d

I'm a creative thinker and problem solver, my background is on design and arts.
I studied product design so I have been prototyping a lot will all sorts of materials, have basic carpentry skills and I'd say I can learn fast new techniques! I'm passionate about craftsmanship. I am a hands-on person, open to undertaking any tasks needed. I'm an enthusiast about photography, both digital and analogue, and can also manage pretty well photo and video editing.
I love food and can teach some Portuguese and Spanish dishes as well as the languages.

Vom Workawayer (Alicia) für Host (Natural building in M'Hamid ...)

I cannot say my experience wasn't amazing, but I've got to say it wasn't at all what I expected, it was maybe better in some ways but to be totally honest it laked a lot of the experience it's described to offer.
I spent there over a week, I went alone, and for the first four days, we didn't do anything related to building the houses. I spent my… read more time going around with Said doing what he was doing. We spent a lot of time with his family, which are all extremely kind and adorable people and that enriched my experience a lot because I really saw and lived the real experience of a local family. l learned a lit about the Berbers lifestyle and traditions and we even, by chance, gave a lift back to their camp, to some relatives of Said, which were nomads, and lived in the middle of the desert, so we got to see how they lived and had tea with them which for me was a priceless experience! During these four days I spent a lot of time at the cafe and at the camp, where we swiped the sand off the floors and cooked, the rest of the time there was nothing much to do so I tried to entertain myself reading, sketching and taking pictures, especially because I don't sleep siesta, and wake up relatively early (9 am) compared to Said.
On the 5th day I got to make sand bricks with the help of a nice friend of Said, who taught me but didn't speak a word of English, it was ok because I could just copy what he was doing but I couldn't ask anything if I had some question about why we were doing something in a certain way. I was a bit disappointing that Said wasn't there building with us as I expressed to him. That night 2 other guys arrived and the next day we did another hour of brick building, again with Said's friend. The last day we did a day trip to the Erg Chi gaga, which is quite a nice trip, that was an optional thing Said offered us to do and it costed about 30 euros each.
As I said I had very good moments there and Said at times was extremely kind but I have to be honest and say overall I felt a bit of a weird vibe going on, especially through the end of my time there. I had too much empty time where I didn't really know what to do, I have to say I don't recommend going alone, especially girls, or if you really want to learn the techniques of building adobe houses. But Said's camp is beautiful, it's completely isolated from everything so it's very calm and quiet. If you are looking more for a kind of peaceful retreat then this might be the place for you.

Said, I hope you don't take this in the wrong way, but I like to be transparent about things, and hope that knowing my honest opinion helps you improve as a workaway host.
