Region: LazioHi, my name is Nadia. I live in a valley near Rome, in a big country House with my mate, Visente and our 3 years old daughter Alice, who daily takes as into her wonderful world, I have always felt that human beings need to find harmony with Nature, inside and outside! I am slowly searching, exchanging, learning methods of gardening, working and generally living that respect the rhythms of the Whole. Now i would like to make a compost toilet and solar shower, i started a sinergic garden, and made a recycled solar food dehydrator! we host some hens and chickens. The land we take care of includes some woods on the hill, loads of brambles, fruit trees, garden, natural water source, ... the glass workshop. It is 30 minutes in the train from rome and 15 from the sea. Generally i try to decrease my consumptions to arrive to self sufficency, without being too rigid though. I do believe in flexibility. As a job, Visente and I blow recycled glass, which we love although it uses a lot of fuel, so we try to concentrate the times of working in the winter and try to use this magic of glass to arise consciousness about recycling and respecting life as a whole.
Region: Lower Normandy**Update** We are not doing any work-away projects during autumn-winter but will recommence spring 2014 with stone work, paving, and decking projects (exterior) and staircase and flooring woodwork projects (interior). **Description** We are a Kiwi family living in historic Normandy, renovating our amazing 470+ year old farmhouse whilst perfecting our French and generally immersing ourselves in French life. We are returning the house to it's traditional majestic beauty by reinstating the thatched roof and exposing it's stone and oak features, whilst at the same time adding modern twists of glass, metal and bold colour, and the occasional 'kiwi twist'. We are a couple who have travelled and worked in many different countries and enjoy learning about different cultures. Here in France, we have a simple but good life enjoying the outdoors in our pool, jacuzzi, trampoline, kids play area, brazier and bonfire pit, etc. We are in the countryside just outside an active village, our 7 year old son goes to the local school (~2km/10min cycle to town), and workawayers are welcome to use our bikes to explore the local towns and cafes, scenic and historical sights, local markets etc. We're in the midst of an extensive ecological project to re-thatch and insulate our chaumiere. This involves many ancillary projects such as paving and decking, terrassing and drainage, exterior insulation, lime repointing and double glazing. Additionally we are in the midst of many interior projects such as the construction of oak spiral stairs, installation of wooden kitchen worktops, and repair of 300 yr old oak flooring. We use natural/traditional products where ever possible and have a simple organic vegetable garden. We are looking for enthusiastic generally capable people who would enjoy helping us in exchange for access to this fantastic part of France. We are of course happy to assist those wishing to improve their French and/or cultural understanding of France and assist you with access to tourist sights where we can. We're close to all the historic D-day sites (actually on the D-day 'route-de-libertie'), the evocative Abbaye d'Hambye is 5 mins away, the local beach (a fantastic never-ending stretch of golden sand) is 30 mins by car, there are wonderful local produce tours (cheese, cider, calvados etc) and it's only 40 mins to the famous Le Mont St Michel.
