We own and operate a commercial goat dairy milking for 9 months of the year on lush river flats in beautiful Gunns Plains in NW Tasmania. We have been doing this for 10 years and prior to that we were both High School teachers. This year from August to December we will be hand rearing 120 goat kids. We are currently building a cheesery to supply fresh milk, yoghurt and cheese to retail outlets.

Maintenance in the garden of the workawayer guest accommodation house is desirable. Trades people with skills in plumbing, building and carpentry would be terrific. Assistance with machine milking in the goat dairy and with rearing the goat kids is a real possibility.
Anyone who has ability to work with their hands for repairing fences and machinery would be a bonus for us. Volunteers MUST have their own transport as the accommodation is 1km from our house and dairy. WE ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN TAKING ON 2 OR MORE VOLUNTEERS (AT THE SAME TIME) - no singles please. We are willing to negotiate long term employment for accommodation and some remuneration if you are suitable for the work we have to offer.

Your accommodation would be in the guest house shown on the photo gallery. You are expected to cook your own meals there and we can provide the food. It is a self contained house with 3 bedrooms (sleeps 7), bathroom, kitchen, lounge, dining room and laundry. It was previously used as farm-stay tourist accommodation so everything you need will be there e.g. linen, cooking appliances crockery, cutlery, pots and pans. Just a short walk across the paddock and you can fish for trout in the river or walk 2 km of our own riverbank to spy for platypus.

Our farm is situated on the gazetted Penguin to Cradle Mountain walking trail. Tourist attractions in or close to Gunns Plains include: Gunns Plains Caves, Wings Wildlife Park, Preston Falls, Leven Canyon and Penguin Markets. Attractions in the cities of Burnie and Devonport are only a 35-40 minute drive from Mathom Farm with Launceston and Cradle Mountain a 1.5 hrs drive.

A reliable, responsible and keen worker Nia demonstrated varied skills any Workawayer host could utilise. Importantly she was always willing to "have a go" at new tasks and the results were excellent. She is good at self-managed jobs given the details of work and expected outcomes and completion date.

I had a great workaway experience here, Maz & Peter made me feel very welcome in my three week stay. I had fun feeding the goats and kids & learning about goat farming. I met some of the locals, got involved in the badminton league and attended my first woodchop event (& met David Foster the world woodchopping champion!)
