Description
We are an 'almost retired' couple living on our smallholding on the side of the Ox Mountains in County Mayo. We are in a lovely scenic rural area with Foxford just 8 kilometres away. Our children are adults and all live away now. Gerry works at home and Jean has recently retired. We have a couple of horses, (both retired!) and some cattle and a dog. A large garden with an orchard, a glasshouse and a woodland. We grow some of our own vegetables and lots of fruit. We would like help with a variety of projects around the place, mostly gardening and general maintenance, also some help with cooking and light househelp.
Jean speaks fluent French and would be happy to help volunteers with improving their English.
We have two bicycles available for exploring in free time. We have been hosts in the past and have hosted almost a hundred students from all over the world so we are very used to sharing our living space and enjoy meeting new people.Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Volunteers will have the opportunity to experience being out in the open environment and sharing ideas and cultural experiences with us. Jean has specialised in Heritage and Anthropology and we are always interested in learning about other's lifestyles.
Help
No particular skills are necessary, just a willingness to get involved and to help will be just fine!

Own double bedroom and shared family bathroom, lots of room for quiet relaxing space if required. Volunteers would share our food and join in with food preparation. We are not vegetarians but can comfortably cater for non meat eaters, our meals are frequently vegetarian and although we no longer produce as much of our food as we used to we do buy almost exclusively organic produce.
What else ...
The area is beautiful with lots of hill walking opportunities in the immediate area and outdoor activities of all sorts nearby. Cultural activities include local theatre/ art centres in nearby towns, a branch of the National Museum of Ireland Country Life is just 20 kms away and one of the very few working woollen mills in Ireland is also almost on our doorstep. Traditional music is frequently to be heard in nearby towns.
The coast and the wonderful sandy beaches we enjoy are also within reach. We would be happy to bring volunteers to local towns or locations when we are going out ourselves. Public transport for local travel is very limited but mainline bus and train are regular and Knock Regional Airport is only half an hour away.A little more information
