Description

Hi! My name is Merel. I am a 23-year-old Dutch girl, raised in a small city in the Netherlands called Woerden -we have very good cheese and an annual cow market ;-) - and earlier this year I graduated from my international bachelor Hospitality Management. Others describe me as a positive, genuine and social person with a love for houseplants, good food and singing.

In my free time I like to read books, walk/cycle -in nature-, cook, get creative, socialise and play boardgames. Besides that, I am an absolute foodie and want to become friends with every dog and cat I meet. The beach is my happy place and my Dutch heart skips a beat with every hill/mountain I see.

I have joined Workaway simply because I want to discover more places, learn new skills and grow as a person. I want to travel in a slower/more sustainable way and find the somewhat 'hidden gems' with cool projects and kind people that can show me their culture/point of view. Finally, my favourite kind of (work)atmosphere is the one you feel at small-scale, personalised and authentic concepts, with people who do what they love. That is also what I hope to find in places I go ;-)

My workaway experience so far:

Happy to teach: Dutch and English (I'm fluent in both). Happy to further improve: German, Spanish and Italian. I understand German and would like more fluidity when speaking back. I had 4 years of Spanish classes during my study and my Italian is mostly food jargon ;-)

Education:
- Hospitality Management at Hotelschool The Hague, 4-year bachelor (my favourite subjects were change management, transformational leadership and my minor Future of Food).
- I completed 3 training programs about personal development and effective communication in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)

Working experience:
- Management internship at a rustic mountain hotel in Italy for 5 months - I worked during weddings, yoga retreats, high season young families with kids, groups & business events. My tasks were both operational (housekeeping, kitchen, hosting, front office) and my own projects (organising events, creating running sheets, being the manager on location).
- administrative student assistant at Hotelschool, the Birkman course (classes about personal development)
- Secretary at a training company - assisting in bookkeeping/finance, welcoming clients, phone/email, catering, barista work
- Waitress in a bistro & restaurant
- Babysitting

What else ...

Open-mindedness, inclusivity, respect and positivity are absolutely awesome :-)

Finally, I like to say I'm both extraverted and introverted. Socialising and creating good memories together makes me very happy. At the same time, snuggling up with a book at the fireplace and nature walks are also a way for me to recharge my battery. I like a balance of both.
