    Description

We are a family who live in the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia. We are semi retired- a school teacher and yoga teacher/children's author. We also spend time volunteering in our community for conservation and people's wellbeing.
We live on a heritage listed property and the house is 120 years old, in Healesville, only one hour from Melbourne.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We have hosted people from all over the world over many years and would love to learn from you about your culture and food.
You could learn from us about growing organic food, permaculture and preserving the produce and using in cooking.
There are a range of ways we grow food- vegetable gardens, fruit trees, a food forest and greenhouse (we even grow bananas in our cool temperate climate).
We try to live a sustainable life, producing much of our own food, low waste/rubbish, using solar energy and eating mainly plant based meals.
So you could learn about how we live in this southern part of Australia.

    Help

We use permaculture principles and grow an organic food producing garden.
We need help with the autumn garden work such as harvesting vegetables, cooking produce, preparing garden beds and planting autumn seedlings.
So it's active work. An interest in growing food would be good. We can show you what to do, so you don't need to be very experienced in gardening.
We also have some building projects- such as repairing decking on the tree house and a frame for netting the garden. This could be done together as we have building skills but need help.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

The current accomodation is a studio apartment (with own bathroom, kitchenette, sitting area).
We anticipate eating meals together and sometimes cooking together in the main kitchen.
We eat mainly plant based meals using produce from our garden and local organic farmers (no meat- some free range eggs and sustainably caught fish). One house member is fully plant based (vegan).

  • What else ...

    What else ...

This is a very popular tourist destination with the world famous Healesville Sanctuary (zoo with Australian animals).
There are opportunities for exploring the local township and region- nature, markets, art and wineries. We are located a short walk to the main shops, food, cafes, art galleries and public transport.
We look forward to sharing what our beautiful region has to offer.
