Description
Howdy! My name’s Alejandro and I’m feeling the call. As for the basics: I’m 24 years old, a San Antonio native, in my last semester of a history degree at UTSA, and want to get out and do something real!
If there’s one thing I love most in the world it’s learning. History, of course, is a big passion—especially that of Latin America and the Muslim world—but I’m also very much into anthropology, religious studies, philosophy. Naturally, I spend a lot of time reading and writing, and I especially love sharing the things I’ve learned with others and learning in turn from them.
If I’m not reading, chances are I’m outside! I devote much of my free time to the wilderness—cycling, hiking, climbing trees, wandering around just looking for something cool in the forest (which there always is!)—if there’s sun and stone and dirt and leaf, I’m there!
Halfway through my time at university, I was derailed by a sudden epiphany. Though I’ve righted my course and am finishing out my degree, I’ve know since then that afterwards I would go do something… I don’t know, real? What I do know is I’ll never be stronger and freer than I am now—so now is the time to get out there, work myself hard, learn as much as I can by doing, meet people I never would have met, and maybe even find a kernel of a future out there. Or maybe not—but the rest still sounds great to me!Interests

I would love to learn about another language and culture, and would be very happy in a language exchange type scenario! I’m always working on my Spanish, but I would also love to learn Arabic, Persian, French, Greek—well, honestly, I’m always down to learn anything!Skills and knowledge I'd like to share or learn

My university studies were primarily in history and anthropology, so I have a very broad knowledge of world events and cultures, and a keen mind (I like to think!) for research, critical thinking, writing, and such. I also enjoy teaching as much as learning, and I have been told I have a flair for engaging people in subjects they would ordinarily have no interest in.
My work history is mostly in food service, so I have all the skills that entails. At all of my past three jobs I have been offered advancement into managerial positions but declined, knowing I eventually wanted to do, well, this! I am no stranger to working hard, alone or with a team, and I consider myself a quick learner as well. My coworkers often tell me they appreciate my “vibe” and describe me as “zen”, expressing that I radiate a calm that keeps spirits lifted even when it gets hectic.
I am not fluent in Spanish, and I always love an opportunity to practice, but my Spanish is serviceable—enough to serve as a translator for a medical team in Guatemala, which I did last year and hope to do again in the future.
Physically, I work out near-daily and like to be strong. I’ve done physical labor in the past, not in any official capacity—but helping friends move, unloading and setting up mobile clinics, that kind of thing. But physical labor is a big part of what I want out of this—to work hard, with my hands, with the land, in ways I never had the chance to living in the city and studying at university.Age

We were all learning as we went & Alejandro was able to jump right in & quickly pick up on any task he worked on.
(His plaster skills were quite impressive after a few days!)
We were working in quite warm weather (many days near 100) & not once was there any complaining or… read more
