Description
This is a musicians retreat and homestead that has been hosting artists and fusing nature and music since 2012. On a 67 acre piece of abandoned family land the vision continues to unfurl, but has always been rooted in a love for nature, music, and people. Throughout the property you'll find pastures and forests, gardens and orchards, multiple cabins, campsites, a musical family living on in a house, a solar powered music studio/stage and a tropical greenhouse. Hosting people is at the heart of the operation here. Throughout the year there's a continual flow of musicians and artists here for residencies, touring bands passing through, shows and events, and great folks like yourself doing a work exchange here, specifically helping with upkeep of the permaculture projects.
THE LAND
The land is nestled just outside of Burnsville North Carolina, at the base of the Black Mountains. Diverse with pastures, pine forests, old growth deciduous forests, streams, and wild life. Very blessed with many old apple, black walnut, cherry, and Chinese chestnuts. And now after 10 years of homesteading and over 100 fruit/nut trees and bushes planted, the fruit production has really taken off.
WHAT'S HERE
So far the livable structures include the main house which is a cozy five bedroom house with a musical common area, 3 tiny houses, a solar powered music studio/cabin, a tropical greenhouse, a big artsy bus thats online, and multiple campsites also
WHO'S HERE?
Depending on the time of year, there are usually between 5-12 people , most of which are artist/musicians doing residencies here, and usually 1 to 2 helpers, mostly between 18-40 years old (but all ages are welcome). We also host people regularly and have many visiting friends and touring musicians.. We host events like potlucks, concerts, music video/movie shoots, and other interesting events throughout the year. There's 1 dogs and 5 cats at the moment, and no chickens or ducks which is rare! We share the land with turkeys, deer, rabbits, groundhogs, chipmunks, squirrels, coyotes, black snakes (harmless), hawks, crows, bluebirds, cardinals, finches, etc.
WILD FOODS/MEDICINES
There is an abundnace of wild edible/medicinal plants and mushrooms in the mountains here. Foraging, eating, sharing, and learning about these incredible resources is part of the lifestyle here. So if you havent tried incredible wild mushrooms like hen of the wood, oysters, lions mane etc, along with many delicious wild plants, you will have the opportunity to do so here.
