I am studying for my Bachelor's Degree in Animal Sciences in the Netherlands. I love learning about animals and no better way than actually working with them!
My next destination:
United Kingdom - from Feb 2019 View allDescription
Hello! My name is Rachel and I am a 23-year-old Canadian university first-year student currently studying for a bachelor’s in Animal Sciences at Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands.
Born and raised in Canada, at the age of 19 I moved to the United Kingdom. It was here I discovered my passion for working with animals. Growing up with a dog, and feeding the neighborhood stray cats, animals have always been an important part of my life.
It wasn’t however until I spent 7 weeks in Wales at a Workaway on a sheep farm during lambing season that I truly gained the perspective that working with animals was something I wanted to dedicate my life to.
This university course has now allowed me the opportunity to gain experience with reptiles, cattle, and pigs. Additionally, I have already completed an internship with Wildlife Aid in Surrey, working with foxes, badgers, hedgehogs, pigeons, and many other British wildlife animals.
The Bachelor of Animal Sciences is quite broad and thus sometimes I am left studying more traditional academic courses, like calculus and organic chemistry. My passion truly flourishes however when given the opportunity to study more animal-centric courses, like animal behavior, animal biology, and especially courses that allow the opportunity to work with animals in person. My aspiration with this degree is to be able to make the latter my everyday situation, working in animal management and care.
I'm a very easygoing person and love learning new things and meeting new people. Being outdoors is something I love (in any weather, rain or shine... or in 3 feet of snow in Canada) and getting dirty doesn't bother me at all. I also have a huge love for theater, reading, and Harry Potter (which might be part of the reason I love the UK so much)Interests

I have lots of animal care experience, having worked on a sheep farm for 7 weeks during lambing season, caring for donkeys, and doing an internship at Wildlife Aid in Surrey caring for a variety of British wildlife, from foxes, hedgehogs, and badgers to Canadian geese and pigeons! This work included feed prep, feeding (including tube-feeding pigeons) cleaning enclosures, daily weighing of animals, and random odd jobs around the facility like enclosure set up for new arrivals, breaking down cages, organizing loads of laundry, and anything else they needed to be done!
I am great at working independently or with others (I worked 5 years in retail and am great with people and admin work). I am good at basic DIY jobs like painting. I am also good at household chores and like to keep tidy :)Age
