My name is Irene. I am currently living in Oslo. I am creative and practical and I like help others and to learn new things.

In my free time I love to travel, go hiking, skiing, climbing and do creative things, such as macramé. I am very social and love to meet people.

I am a flexible person who adapts fast to new environments. I am very interested in learning about new cultures, skills and languages.

I would like to participate in different kind of volunteer work, but I have a lot of experience with children.

I became a member of Workaway mainly because I like to feel that I can contribute with something. I like to have something to do while I am traveling, and I think Workaway can be a great way to meet new people, both locals and travelers.

Julie, Stefan and Luzie are amazing hosts. I had a wonderful time volunteering at their hostel for one month as a babysitter. I will miss them a lot, especially Luzie. Hopefully I will come back some day! Uvita is also a beautiful place to live.

I had a really nice time volunteering in Lizet's tienda and coffee shop. She and her family is wonderful and very welcoming. I got to practice a lot of Spanish with them as well as with the costumers. I would love to come back and visit them if I go back to Colombia.

This hostel has a great location sorounded by nature. I was given a very nice private room. I liked the work I was doing, which was varying every day. Some tasks were a bit challenging, but I still liked it. However, I did not like the hosts attitude towards me especially my second and my third day. The second day I was not feeling well, but I… read more still tried to do my tasks as I did not want to disappoint my host. After a little while I vomited and I figured out I had diarrhea. I told the host that I vomited and needed to rest. As he seemed annoyed by this, I tried to go back to work a bit later despite I had eaten almost nothing and had very little energy. I soon started to feel worse and I vomited again and spent the rest of the day in bed. Despite telling the host that I vomited twice and had been running to the bathroom all day, he asked me a little bit later "So, are you continuing the work this afternoon?". Later I figured out he thought I lied about being sick, something I would never do. One of the reasons why I decided to volunteer during my travel, is that I like to work and I like to feel that I do something useful or contribute with something good.
The third day I was working on their water canal, which included a lot of digging and some removing of plants. I liked the task, but at the same time it was a bit heavy work for me. I also did some other small tasks that he had asked me for. When I was done with my four hours I felt I had done a good job and I asked the host to see if he liked it or if he wanted more done for the next day. His reaction was "Is this all you have done in 4 hours? Remember you are a volunteer. You have to work, work, work." I was shocked by this reaction and felt that he did not appreciate my effort. The next days I did a little bit more than he asked me for to be sure not to get the same feedback as well as to compensate for the lost work the day I was sick.
The last days of volunteering I felt that my effort was appreciated more, but I was not feeling comfortable staying there as I was always worried that the host would come with more patronizing comments.
I do not like to break agreements, but in this place I did not feel well and I decided to leave one week before.
I think respect, trust and the ability to appreciate the volunteers good effort is very important if you are going to be a host. The ability to give constructive feedback rather than criticism is also something a host should have.
If the work is so hard that the volunteer is not able to make the host satisfied, maybe the work fits better for a professional.

Irene helped upcycling some wine bottles we had around the hostel. She is very creative and created these holders for the planters and also helped the girls at the reception. Very easy to get along with, she can bring lots of fun! Highly recommended for any position!
