  • Description

Healthy, mature female, who enjoys traveling and learning of new cultures, people and wanting to become proficient at spanish. I love the idea of this website and have used caretaker's gazette for years in finding folks to come to my place in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Now I have the time and want to give back, what others did for me in helping me create a women's retreat - changed into a small, funky guest house. Good references, responsible, non-smoker ......... occasional alcoholic drink.

I am both a volunteer and also host volunteers in my home in Rhode Island. My daughter, Cindy, is busy with her own family & life at this time to share my travel plans, so I'm going back to a single volunteer........ though we do love traveling together.

My granddaughters are becoming volunteers also, and I'm willing to go anywhere that may put me in reasonable distance from where they end up - so I'm very open to location. Would be nice to practice my spanish, but not necessary.

When I'm not traveling, I open my Rhode Island home to Air B&B guests, from all over the world - both in spare rooms in my home and a permanent tent site out back. I enjoy sharing with others and continue learning how we are all connected. You're welcome to check out my referrals from guests & my home on Air B&B - "Beyond New Dawn", - go to: www.airbnb.com/users/show/7657288

  • More details about your skills

I am a lic. Registered Nurse, well traveled, both with my family & doing volunteer work in 3rd world countries. Travel started as a flight attendant, then to sailing charters. For 15 years I created, owned & operated, New Dawn, a women's retreat in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Here I offered work exchange programs, and gave my life to my guests. (Why I never became fluent in spanish - most guests were "gringos".) Gardening, being under the open sky, whether building, tending to animals, children or broken fences are most familiar. I'm experienced, a hard worker, common sense, a team player, will follow instructions and enjoy sharing and contributing. I am both a host and a volunteer.. Love the entire philosophy of sharing & learning. I am a licensed vehicle operator (also have sg. eng. pilots license - but that was back in my 40's) - run an outboard, kayaks, canoes; cook; garden - nonsmoker

  • What else ...

At 76 years, I am strong, capable and in good health. (also have good health insurance) I'm also a former flight attendant - I do not enjoy being a " single tourist" and why I think it is a good way to meet the local people and culture away from home. Because I also have a comfortable home, children and grandchildren, I am limiting my trips to 2 months at a time. In the winter months I prefer to go to warm climates and practice my spanish, with total immersion in a spanish speaking environment. You can learn more by googling my name or New Dawn, Vieques, Puerto Rico.
Winter of 2015 - volunteered in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rico for 6 weeks, then on to Panama with the Floating Doctors for 1 month. I've had the privilege of traveling world wide, with my son, who captains huge Matson container ships. Worked on a cattle ranch in Uruguay as volunteer 2014 - had horses of my own in Puerto Rico on Vieques. Believe age has its benefits in being a self starter, mature, responsible, bringing wisdom and patience with new situations, learn easily, self content and happy to follow instructions.
1/2020 Volunteered at a Wayuu women's project (dear to my heart), Talento Colectivo, at Playa Camaron, Columbia, near the Venzuelan border. Sorry the host is no longer taking volunteers.
