Description
Hello folks! We are Emmy (23, Dutch) and Markus (30, German), and after several years at university we are both looking forward to adventures where we can get our hands dirty and meet all sorts of people. Soon it's time for us to dive into a more settled life in lovely Sweden, but first we're excited to try different ways of living and travel all around Europe. After the hustle and bustle of city life in Utrecht, Dresden, Dortmund and Singapore, we both long for some nature and outside time, a more simple and purpose-driven life.
Some info about our individual selves: Markus is an IT wizard, and Emmy has studied subjects all over the place, from Neuroscience to Artificial Intelligence and more recently Sustainability Sciences. We both speak English and Dutch/German fluently, have learned to speak basic German/Dutch and between us we know bits of Spanish, Swahili and Swedish (the latter is work in progress). We enjoy hiking, having discussions about mind experiments and engineering sustainable projects, making bad word puns and learning new languages. In addition, we're both musical and enjoy singing: Markus plays the trumpet, dreams of learning to play the bagpipes and Emmy will play any instrument she can get her hands on. We're independent, easy-going and pro-active, and aren't afraid of a bit of hard work. Finally, we have a weak spot for old buildings and hope to one day restore one ourselves.
So far we've had one amazing Workaway experience on a poultry farm in Germany, and we're hoping to have many more adventures.

We can do basic things like cooking, painting, etc. Emmy is a born organizer, and Markus is excellent with computers. Emmy can tell what you had for dinner yesterday based on your brain activity. Okay, that last thing was a joke, but the rest is true.

We had a great time helping out Thomas and Erica with all their various projects around their farm. In addition,… read more some meals can be made with food from the farm itself or the surroundings, like rhubarb lemonade, nettle soup and barbecues with "happy" (wild) meat. Erica speaks English very well, Thomas is still learning but can already make himself understood quite well. They are fun people who love a joke. And with four cats walking around, so there's always a cat to cuddle with when you need some feline affection.
Our main task was to empty and clean out part of a barn, and then build and fill shelves. Other things we did were weeding, shoveling soil for the vegetable plot, harvesting rhubarb, moving and engineering sheep fences, cleaning the chicken coop, moving items around, cleaning a boat to prepare it for sale and throwing away items at a recycle centre.
As we were their first workawayers, not everything was completely running smoothly yet. The work was not always very organized, as they have many projects running and even more ideas, so they have a lot of hay on their fork. Some days the work started at 9:30 and ended at 15:00, other days started at 11:00 and ended at 17:00 (with the necessary breaks in between). It's best if Workawayers that come here have no problems with coping with a lack of structure, occasionally dealing with very dirty spaces (think dust clouds and rodent excretement, however gas masks are provided) and sometimes a lack of guidance. But they are quite understanding, so you don't have to do anything that makes you feel very uncomfortable. Also with free days they are very flexible.
There's lot of places to explore around the farm, and there are two bicycles you can use for getting around. The farm is a 15 minute cycle away from Skyttorp train station, from where every 30 minutes a train leaves for Uppsala. Next, there are great paths for going for walks and hikes through the beautiful forests and fields in the area, a lake for swimming at a 40-minute cycle away, and a river for swimming just 20 minutes of cycling away.
