  • Description

We're a married couple, both 28 years old and come from Southern Jutland in Denmark. We've known each other for five years and are used to traveling together. We both love nature and beeing outdoors and thoroughly enjoy experiencing the wonders of the natural world wherever we are. This has also led us to educate ourselves in related fields, Mie as an AP graduate in environmental technology and Mads as a biologist (although he still needs to finish his master's degree). We own a small garden house in the outskirts of the city where we live during summer, tending a garden and growing veggies.

    Mie:
    - I'm easy to be around and open to try new things. I don't make a lot of noise, but I love getting to know new people and challenge my own perspectives on things. I started travelling in 2017 in my gap years, and although I enjoy my life at home, I feel the best way to live a life is to travel. I consider myself empathetic, curious and conscientious.

    Travel experience
    - During my travels I have lived and worked at a children's home in Honduras for five months, travelled through central America (hiking volcanoes etc.), and lived with a family in Chicago during a university exchange.

    Hobbies and interests
    - I love the outdoors, especially hiking trips. I also enjoy cooking, reading, cycling, thrifting. I'm interested in urban planning, sustainability, history, architecture and nature. I have previously volunteered at summer camps for refugee families and as a coordinator for a charity for vulnerable children.

    Mads:
-I believe myself to be a kind, patient, enthousiastic and happy young man. I'm not afraid of hard work, and enjoy creating and crafting stuff. I really love learning new skills, and I am more than happy to try my luck with something completely new if necessary - especially if it is outdoors.

    Travel experience
-I have traveled in many parts of Europe and have had several workaway-stays in the northern hemisphere. I have worked as a dog-handler and dog-sledding guide for two winter-seasons in artic Norway, and have worked as a farm hand and builder in both Norway and Scotland.

    Hobbies and interests
    - I like building and creating things and especially enjoy woodworking and carving. I enjoy playing music and mostly play the fiddle nowadays, but I like to play whatever instruments I can get my hands on. I also enjoy philosophy and history (I previously studied archaeology for 2 years), and absolutely love nature: I enjoy hiking, skiing, sleeping outdoors, finding edible plants and mushrooms, studying insects, and generally just experiencing nature. I will surely be able to tell a good story or two about the fantastic life that surround us in both the grand and the miniature scale. Besides, I enjoy living an active lifestyle and I have been practicing capoeira for 5 years. I also do a bit of photography and filming, and would like to spend more time honing these skills during my travels.

We could say many more things about ourselves, but you'd be better of experiencing it yourself, so hey - let's have a video-conversation if you're considering us for your Workaway stay.

More details about my language interests
We're both interested in getting better at speaking spanish, driven by both the practicality of it as well as the pure interest of language-learning. We like linguistics and appreciate the diversity and intricacies of different languages, and does thus like to share this with others. If need be, we would easily be able to teach some of the languages we know well. While Mie is decent at speaking spanish and eg. have lived in Honduras for some time, Mads is still only learning to speak spanish but is rapidly improving.

  • More details about your skills

We're both quite creative in different aspects and are able to both do and lead creative projects. Besides, we're both professionally trained in the natural sciences of sustainability, and know quite a bit about this in terms of both climate, environment and biodiversity. We would thus most likely be able to contribute to various sustainability and ecology projects that you might have, or help you start something new. This could eg. be helping strenghtening your CSR, create a plan to increase the local biodiversity or to help reduce you environmental impact.

Individually we have various skills and experiences:

    Mads:
    - I have experience in many different forms of work and my experience includes working with farm animals of all kinds and being a dog-handler and tourist-guide in arctic Norway. I have been working as a carer for people with mental disorders and alcohol-dementia, and as a full-time substitute teacher in elementary school and junior highschool, teaching children from 9 to 16 years old. I have experience with different kinds of construction work, especially carpentry, joinery and painting, and know how to use most tools. I have been working as a carpenter on both smaller projects and a large project involving restoring the wooden constructions of a 12th century church. Besides, I have been teaching biology and morphology of insects and plants at university, and collecting fielddata for scientific studies on biodiversity.

I particularly enjoy working with building projects and would like to improve these skills further, and I believe that I/we can contribute considerable to projects involving ecology, nature conservation and sustainability. I would also enjoy the opportunity to guide other people in the nature, whether it is of purely biological nature or related to outdoor activities and sports.

    Mie:
I like practical work, working outdoors and enjoy different practical tasks, such as garden work, maintenance e.g. painting. I also enjoy creative work such as drawing and painting, and would like to develop more craft skills.

    Previous work:
I have experience caring for people with multiple disabilities, cleaning, and in a municipal sustainability department. Voluntary work includes teaching English at a school in Honduras, and work with a children's rights NGO.

    Education:
My field of study consisted of half practical, half theoretical approach to the environment, including water management, soil contamination, nature conservation and waste management. My internship was at the municipal waste management company, and I have a general interest in resource management and how to create a more sustainable world.
