Description
My name is Marina, I'm from Catalonia yet currently living in Iceland.

Although I have only enrolled a Workaway position previously, throughout the years I also lived/worked in Ireland, Norway, Bulgaria, Kenya and Jordan, and I always choose local families to live with or volunteer positions in order get closer to the local culture.

Everything started back in 2015 when I decided to get on my first solo backpacking trip around Rio de Janeiro and Argentina. It was an absolutely amazing experience that allowed me to discover hundreds of new ways of traveling.
Other backpacking routes around the Balcans, Scandinavia or 3 more trips to my beloved Central and South America, made me fall (more) deeply in love with traveling.

Some of the positions I enrolled "on route" are: volunteering in hostels in Rio de Janeiro, Mexico and Argentina, au-pairing with kids in Ireland and Kenya, helping in a vegetarian restaurant in Argentina (as a waitress), assisting in cleaning tasks in Norway and Iceland, Spanish teacher and NGO volunteer in Jordan, and in 2019 I "workawayed" with husky dogs in Finland... Now, I am ready to discover and enroll any other challenging position that might come across this summer 2024!

I am currently looking for a 3-weeks position aprox, around July 2024, somewhere warm (since I will be traveling from Iceland) and with new challenging duties that can fit my experience yet allow me to learn sth completely different at the same time :)

I studied PR and Advertising at the University of Barcelona due to my interest on social relations and communication techniques.
My main skills and interest are social relations, language learning, customer service, management and event planning (I took my master on it).

Later on, in 2020 I started my professional career in hospitality in Iceland, where I am currently settled while assisting a Front Desk Manager at a 4* hotel.

My love for Workaway and volunteer programs come from my desire to enroll different and challenging positions outside my confort zone and acquired knowledge, as I consider myself very chameleonic and I'm ready to enroll (almost) any position :)

Liisa and the family opened their home on what It became my very first workaway experience, and I will always be glad that they did so.
It was a pleasure to get to know more about Finish culture with them and share some traditional finish meals, learn some basic words (specially while playing with the kids) and getting involved with Liisa's… read more daycare centre tasks.

Muonio: The town is located in quite a remote place up north in Finland, so don't expect much to do around, even thought you will be busy enough with kids and dogs :) You can take some short and beautiful walks, specially the one that heads to Olos ski resort, but don't expect any kind of nightlife or afternoon pub.

Work: The routine with the dogs is very easy and very rewarding, you will soon learn to love those amazing huskies. However, some days might be longer than others, specially Thursdays and Fridays, when you will be traveling to a place nearby (one hour driving) to help with dog sledding tours. My days (in April) started about 8.30h when I feed the dogs and clean their cage. Later on, I joined Liisa and assisted her with the kids she takes care of (which are adorable :) After a short nap time, sometimes I had to pick up Elsa from school (about 20m walking max) and join them again for their afternoon snack. Around 03.30pm I used to head back to the dogs to feed them and clean their cage again (although afternoons are easier and faster to take).
You don't really need to have previous experience with dogs; a with a good attitude and loads of curiosity you should be able to manage easily (except when dogs escape the cage or you have to carry them... they are extremely strong!!!!!)
No need to say, that kids will look for you to play all day long :) Elsa, the oldest, is the sweetest princes on earth and Elmo.. well, he's just the funnies kid with endless changing moods :)

The house: House is very nice. You have everything you need at your own use: washing machine, kitchen (even tho they cook for you really nice meals), wooden sauna once or twice a week, etc.

The family: As said before, they are a very nice, welcoming and warm family. They will teach you a lot about Finish culture and dogs, specially Tapanis, who seams to know everything about all kind of animals in the area. Liisa is the perfect housewife and will show you (if you don't know :) how to manage 1 year-old kids, change their clothes, get them dress for the "finish spring", etc.

All overall, a very rewarding personal experience.
