I had a truly wonderful stay with Ness and Brett and their two kids Ari and Thea. From day one they were warm, open and generous — I felt welcomed and included immediately. Working hours were around 5 hours a day and mostly gardening (weeding, mulching etc). I also got to help once at Ness’s trust replanting flax, which was super interesting — Ness knows so much about local flora, fauna and Māori culture, and I had the chance to meet and talk with locals. Other tasks included organizing the food chamber, tidying and a couple of days of childcare, which I genuinely enjoyed. The cultural exchange was rich — Ness and Brett openly shared how they live, we exchanged experiences, and both know all the hidden gems in and around Te Anau. They encouraged and respected time off and were always excited to recommend trips or places to explore. Ness even took me on a short trip with the kids which was lovely. Accommodation in their caravan was very clean, warm and comfortable. Food was always more than enough — and although they are not vegetarian, Ness and Brett made sure there were great vegetarian options for me, which I appreciated a lot. Overall, communication was clear, responsive and easy-going. I felt supported, trusted and included. I am very grateful for the time I spent with them and can warmly recommend staying with this family. I would gladly return!

Staying with Isabella was one of the most enriching and heartwarming experiences I’ve ever had through Workaway. She is an incredibly kind, admirable, and inspiring woman — full of fascinating stories, deep knowledge about so many topics, and an impressive ability to share it all in several languages. Conversations with her are never dull; she can switch from history and art to philosophy or local anecdotes effortlessly, always with humor and genuine warmth. Pilu, her gentle and calm cat, is equally charming – perfectly bilingual at the very least, and the most relaxed companion you could ask for. From the very first moment of arrival, Isabella made me feel completely welcome and at home. The accommodation is far beyond what you would expect from a Workaway: you get your own spacious private area, including a personal bathroom, in a beautiful and perfectly located building. Everything you might need – cafés, markets, and transport – is just around the corner, and you can easily reach the city center of Padua by foot within minutes. The experience itself felt much more like a city break or a small cultural holiday than actual work. Isabella’s generous hospitality, her delicious cooking (especially the amazing homemade tiramisu that was waiting for me on my first evening!), and her countless recommendations for local trips made every day special. She even gave me a private city and museum tour, full of historical insights and stories that only a true local could know. Padua itself is a vibrant and beautiful city – lively thanks to its student atmosphere, but also rich in culture, architecture, and charm. And if you get the chance; go for a trip to the Euganean Hills on a sunny day – the view and atmosphere are absolutely worth it. Venice is also just a short train ride away, making short trips absolutely effortless. All in all, this Workaway is much more than an exchange – it’s a genuine opportunity to connect, learn, laugh, and enjoy Italian culture in the best possible way. Thank you, Isabella and Pilu, for your warmth, generosity, and everything I learned during my stay. I couldn’t recommend this experience more highly!

Hosting Roni and Shay was a truly special experience for all of us at the farm. From the moment they arrived, they brought warmth, kindness, and a peaceful energy that made them feel like part of the family right away. They were thoughtful, respectful, and always willing to help — whether in the fields or simply sharing time and stories in the kitchen. We especially appreciated their curiosity about our culture and their openness to connect with everyone around them. Evenings filled with laughter, card games, and delicious meals together are memories we’ll cherish for a long time. Roni and Shay, thank you for your beautiful presence. You reminded us of the joy that comes from simple living, shared moments, and kind-hearted people. You will always have a home here at Gagan Farm, and we hope to welcome you back one day.

Dear Sawicki Family, First of all, thank you so much for hosting me! I stayed with you for 9 months, and this was actually my very first Workaway experience, so I was super nervous at the beginning. But Shelley welcomed me so warmly, even though my English wasn’t that good at first. She always cared about me and gave me so much advice about work and life — she was like a mother to me. Actually, she is my Canadian mom! 😁 During my stay, I got to experience so many new things — painting, shoveling snow, installing furniture, gardening, and more. Everything was new to me and such a great experience. I also loved walking together on that beautiful trail behind the house, and cooking our countries’ traditional foods for each other. I’ll never forget your piyaz — it’s one of my favorite dishes now (the taste of memories! 😂). Mark, you’re such a funny guy, and your jokes really helped me improve my English. Working with you was fun and educational at the same time. Thanks for always looking out for me — you’re my Canadian dad! 😁 Thank you so much for all the love, memories, and experiences. These 9 months are something I’ll be proud of for the rest of my life. Wishing you both health, happiness, and all the best in everything you do. Thank you again — lots of love! ❤️

Oh goodness, Elaine we will miss you!! We had such an awesome 5 weeks, we could happily have stayed forever in the treehouse! Elaine is a wealth of knowledge and generous with her time. She was always patient, kind and excited when teaching us to use new power tools, identify native plants, and new building skills. The work is varied and there is a good mix of working alone and working socially. The treehouse is a slice of heaven. Equipped with all cooking facilities you could want and a comfy spacious bed. It is peaceful and private, and we were incredibly grateful for it. We knew we were in for a brilliant 5 weeks from our very first dog walk our first day. Elaine is curious, absolutely hilarious, and we shared many interesting conversations full of belly laughs! Sending big love to you Elaine, and big hugs for Molly and Derek - we are so grateful for our stay! We hope to see you again later in the journey!

Adele stayed a couple of weeks with me in regional Queensland. Her stay was memorable in that she became like a friend to me. It was very enjoyable to spend time with her in conversation. Her English is extremely good. Adele is an easy going person. She settled in quickly and was enthusiastic about exploring my area. Adele helped me with mainly housekeeping work which I appreciated very much. She has an excellent attitude to her work. She is chef by trade in Italy but she didn't mind helping me with cleaning. I was quite moved by her commitment to animal well-being. I thought it was lovely how dedicated and disciplined she was with her values and her adherence to a vegan lifestyle. So she is a gem: great worker, humble person, wonderful guest to have for a chat, easy going. She won't do any self-promotion but she is also very talented with art and did a beautiful artwork in acrylic paints which is a nice souvenir of her stay.

I had a wonderful time staying with Erin and her family! They are such a lovely and open-minded family, and I felt welcome from the very first day. The boys are full of energy and so much fun to be around. Erin also took great care of me, especially when I got sick, which I really appreciated. They included me in family activities and even took me on some trips. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I’m very happy and thankful for the time I spent with them!

Happy travels and all the best Lotta!

It was a great pleasure to get the opportunity to contribute to this project. Everyone I met was lovely and I felt welcome from the very beginning. The cultural exchange with the locals, the openness of the people, and the proximity to the beautiful river were some of the many highlights. When staying there, you will want to feel comfortable with being in nature most of the time and shouldn’t mind having mosquitoes around you most of the day. :D

Deysi and Hiro are wonderful people. They made me feel welcomed. Always asking if I was okay, or needed something. And they are always ready to give you a hug! This workaway is good to escape the city, be surrounded by an amazing panorama, nature and to have a quiet time away from stress . The work is heavy with manual labour- so be ready for this! Lots of digging, lifting wheelbarrowing...etc but there is always a nice quick break in which Deysi prepares some tea. The work was a bit heavy for me at times so I would take a quick rest or tell Deysi/Hiro and they respected this. Cons: Cold- Make sure you have appropriate clothes/footwear. Social- Luckily Deysi and Hiro are very communicative/interesting and open people so there is no problem chatting with them but if you want to know even more people and have even more social time then it's highly dependent on the  other volunteers that are there (also make sure your Spanish is on point)! Conclusion: I found Deysi and Hiro very accommodating, welcoming, respectful and kind. One of the highlights was walking to the amazing waterfall on this volcanic land,  chatting into the early morning with Hiro's guests and talking to the young adults/helping them with English! Gracias 🙏

Ruth is a wonder! She came highly recommended by trusted friends, but still managed to exceed all expectations. She helped us out with so many things and was incredibly generous with her time and skills. It was a real shame that Nick was working the entire time she was with us so we had no cool building projects on the go but she was kind enough to help out with the roofing job Nick was doing and a timber fencing project. We are beyond grateful and can't recommend Ruth highly enough

We're not religious at all, but it really felt like Peter and Jasmin had fallen from heaven! In the two weeks they stayed with us they spent nine days adventuring, but in the five days they were here they got a month of work done and were such a joy to have around. They built a pond, constructed rock walls, dug out enormous rocks to make a new garden area, pushed endless barrows of materials, buried water pipes, cooked delicious food and even came to help us for a full day of landscaping and fence building in Launceston. We had planned to have a year long break from hosting but after having these guys stay we were totally reenergised about the joys of welcoming wonderful people into our lives

We had such a blast hosting Tristan! The two weeks went way too fast. He's an absolute machine with physical work but also good in the kitchen, always the first to jump on washing the dishes, cleaning up after jobs and seeing whatever needed doing and doing it. He's also just great company and brought a lot of fun, good vibes and good music to our home. We'd be delighted to have him back anytime as a volunteer or as a friend

Our time with Bahrul was unforgettable. He is a man of principles, but yet so open minded to other cultures. He took us to the best restaurants in Magelang, showed us mountains and temples in the area, and arranged us very comfortable private rooms. He was a wonderful host, and always checked in with us to know if we were doing well. It was also a great honor to meet so many students. They work very hard and are really ambitious, but are at the same time so humble and polite. It was really nice to be around them. They are curious about other people’s life and are proud to tell you about theirs. They are always in for a joke, and offer you help with whatever you need. We met them in the mornings during class, and we sometimes hang out in the afternoon/evening. We really hope we come back one day! Terimah kasi and smoga succes to everyone in Magelang

Hiroshi was with us for 4 days of most horrible weather - we are keen for him to come back in sunshine! He was such a hard working man who did all the tasks asked of him willingly and energetically. Together we shifted 6 ute loads of water-logged gum mulch and renewed all the paths through the vegetable and flower gardens and dug out mud from the steps before renewing the mulch on them. Much of the time we were working in drizzling rain and muddy underfoot but there were no complaints. Two other 'tedious' but dry jobs involved shelling hazelnuts and tying up cabbage-tree leaves for kindling - also no complaints! His courtesy, quiet nature and strong work ethic made him a pleasure to work with and we enjoyed his company and meal time conversations a great deal. We would welcome Hiroshi to come back any time and feel privileged to have had the opportunity to meet him.

Manna came to work with us between commitments in the city - she stayed four days and we could not recommend her highly enough. Her communication skills are excellent - instructions were only ever needed once - and all the tasks were undertaken with enthusiasm and positivity - including barrowing mulch, feeding fruit trees, transplanting seedlings, making kindling, weeding, moving compost and prepping the greenhouse pots for spring planting. Manna's curiosity, ability to ask insightful questions, and genuine interest in organic growing and sustainability led to great conversations both in the garden and at the table. We loved her warmth, sense of humour, strong sense of social justice and open-mindedness. She was a hard and willing worker who got stuck in, worked efficiently, and was keen to learn new skills. We would love to have her back any time and wish her the best for her travels in Aotearoa.
