You know when you find a place where you just feel at home? Well, that’s exactly how I felt in Sanuki. I first spent a month there in February, in this small community tucked away in the middle of Shikoku. During that time, I got to do a bit of everything: create content for social media, cook for the group, introduce my country to the local school kids, and even teach English to Japanese residents in town (have you ever found a volunteering place where you can do all that?). I enjoyed it so much that I asked to come back — and ended up spending May and June there again. I found my old tasks waiting for me, along with some new ones: organizing events like Yoga Day or English Game Day for kids, cleaning the school, doing grocery runs several times a week (and sometimes playing taxi too — I was one of the few with a driver’s license!). But let’s be honest: that’s not really why I came back, nor why I felt so at home there. I think it’s because, over those three months, I got to live so many small moments that made everything feel special: An endless amount of chocolate cakes I baked for the team (it’s supposed to be a brownie recipe but, for some reason, I never managed to make it right); countless bike rides to Tsuda Beach — day and night (same for my visits to the 7/11, by the way 😅); trips to places like Kochi, Naruto (take the boat and the bridge, trust me, both are amazing), Matsuyama, and Takamatsu (useful tip: the first train back to Sanuki is at 5:48 a.m.); playing golf, joining a handmade udon workshop, spending every lunch break playing solitaire with mates and workers (I’m terrible, what can I say), karaoke nights in the gym, movie nights, and long conversations about life with the team… I think you get the point — I really loved this place, and I think I even made some true friends there. Thanks for everything, guys. I miss you all! 🫶🏻

Massimo is one of a kind! If you're looking for a friendly host who will do everything to make you feel at home, and you're able to sort out your clothes and help him in his beautiful garden, then come here! I look forward to visiting again in the future and setting up my hammock in your mountains, my friend! A presto!

The best volunteering experience I could have asked for! It is such an inspiring organisation. I have learnt so much and I feel so lucky to have been welcomed into this little family. Although the work can be hard and I was often exhausted at the end of the day, the dogs and their gratitude make it so rewarding and I truly enjoyed every minute of it. The whole experience is incredibly fulfilling, you’ll never want to leave! The volunteer house is great and I was super comfortable here. The shared bathroom and kitchen are equipped with everything you need! There was always hot water and there’s also a washing machine which is very handy when you’re getting covered in mud every day! Ivan is amazing and buys groceries for the volunteers once a week, you just write a list of what you need! There is also a group chat for all the workers and volunteers so communication is great and everyone is happy to help. Be prepared for the dogs to steal your heart! I never imagined it would be this hard to leave them all behind. Almost all of the dogs are incredibly friendly and just want some love and attention. The work is as described and involves feeding, cleaning, and walking or playing with the dogs. Ivan makes a clear work schedule so you always know when you’re working and when you have free days. Aside from the work, I also enjoyed board game nights (curtesy of Ivan 😁), cooking with the other volunteers, watching the sunset, and stargazing! I can’t thank everyone enough! The lovely staff, the other volunteers I shared a home with, all the sweet dogs, Ivan who takes such great care of the volunteers, and Ivana - the incredible force behind it all. Saying goodbye was so difficult but I can’t wait to come back. Hvala! ❤️

Thanks for Leon's help, he helped me to renovate the road and protecting the trees way faster that I expected , so we could enjoy a few beers and nice talks in the afternoon with the nice weather. He got his own van so that helps too, cheers 👍

This was my first work away and it was simply wonderful! It instantly felt like family. The working hours are short but it is labor intensive. There’s something very satisfying about looking over a field that you cleared, plowed, and planted. It was very impressive to see how the farmers in this region are constantly working. It’s hard to say what my favorite part was! The food is wonderful and the mom will make sure that you get enough to eat. Waking up early and going on a walk through the hills before breakfast was a highlight but the nightly card games was probably my favorite part. Make sure to bring games, a book, or a favorite hobby as their will be downtime as you wait for the dew to dry up in the morning.

I stayed a month (4weeks) at the sanctuary (in my van). With my boyfriend and our dog! For me, it was the first time I worked with animals and it was definitely an experience. That is also the reason why I do volunteerswork, so thank you for that! It's off-grid, so don't expect hot showers and electricity, but embrace it, the moments when you have it. I worked 3 hours in the afternoon with all kind of animals and 1 hour in the morning at centellas. Most part of your job is giving out food, walking with dogs, and ofcourseee cleaning up a lot of shit! 💩 My dog loved it when he could "work" with me in the mornings🐾 If you’re looking for a social place to make friends and go out on Friday nights, this isn’t the place. Everyone tends to keep to themselves. Very very good to improve your spanish! If you don't speak spanish at all, it could be a big challenge. In my case, I think I improved a lot 🤗 If there was a problem or when I wanted to switch my free days for example, Fer listens, is flexible and will try his best to find solutions. Thanks for your efforts and for this full experience 🙏🏻

I had such a wonderful time volunteering here! I stayed for 2 weeks and I learned so much. Having long term travel plans, I was excited to do my first workaway and experience being part of a community. Everyone here was so welcoming and kind, and there was great communication for what was expected of us as volunteers. It was only a few hours of work a day and the work provided a good way to become friends with the other volunteers, but also put into practice the meditation skills you can learn here. If you are interested in learning more about Buddhism you will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions, as everyone was very open to talking about life at the monestary. There are a lot of optional classes you can join, a museum, and plenty of places to get tea/coffee/snacks. As I continue my traveling, I have been applying the skills I learned here and it has helped me find peace in stressful travel situations. I highly recommend this if you have the opportunity, whether you are just visiting Taiwan for a short stop or if you are a longterm traveler you will learn a lot and find calm here.

After almost a month I was very sad to leave! Everyone was so welcoming, the animals are adorable and the farm is situated beautifully on the edge of Frankenwald. My main task was looking after the chicken, ducks and geese and taking the dog for a walk- that is, two hours daily exploring the forests and pastures around Mittelberg! Markus was at work most of the time. However when he was there he would teach me about organic and sustainable principles in farming while we were out setting up fences or checking water troughs. He also pointed out rare insects and plants that grow there. I spent most of my time in the kitchen, and lots of it talking to Erwin and Petra- they're easy going and we got along right away. Often I'd be sitting in the kitchen, cooking mushrooms or baking and they would sit with me and make conversation on all different topics. It was so lovely with Petra and Erwin. Other than looking after the chooks and the dog I didn't have any fixed tasks most of the time. So I ended up finding my own projects like picking apples, baking cakes, preserving green tomatoes in a chutney and beetroot straight off the field. I left the farm a few times to see eg Bamberg. Although it is handy to have a car in Mittelberg you don't really need one. Markus was happy to drop me off at the train station in Kronach when he drove to work, or Erwin combined it with going shopping. Kronach and Bamberg are worth a visit, and there's a direct train to Nuremberg as well. Thank you so much for having me stay with you! I'll be back.

It's been a pleasure to visit Gabija and Ignas, their two children and cute doggy - they made us feel warmly welcomed throughout the stay. Their place is very well designed and magically surrounded by forests and meadows. It was also interesting to learn about how they built their strawbale house. No day felt like the previous - we went on beautiful hikes, made delicious food (Gabija is a fabulous cook), visited and invited neighbours, and had many beautiful conversations. Vitali was also lucky to experience a calming and refreshing yoga session with Ignas. While there, Vitali had the chance of building a big wooden shelf in the new shed - which was a lot of fun. All necessary tools were available and in very good condition. Leaving this cozy place, we new that we are now friends and will see each other again. Many thanks from Vitali, Hanne and Esco ❤️

It was a great pleasure to have Sesta with us. She's a very nice and intelligent person and also a hard worker who sees what has to be done and learns very fast. She's open-minded, easy going and interested in many things. Also very mature for her young age. We had great conversations. We would welcome her back without any hesitation.

Hosting Marie was a wonderful experience. She helped me a lot with my granddaughter and around the house as I had to juggle taking care of a small child all summer and work at the same time. She is a very pleasant roommate, very respectful and easygoing. We miss you and you can come back any time.

My partner and I spent two weeks here, and we feel so grateful to have been part of such an amazing project, who do so much for local animals and also for people and travellers. We didn't want to leave! It was so easy to settle into a routine here. Tasks were spread out among everybody, ranging from dog walking, cooking, going to the market, helping with the laundry, repairing or building, and more. There was no hierarchy, and decisions and discussions took place as a group. We really appreciated this format and the mutual respect all around, it was very cool. The work was very fulfilling and we both learnt a lot every day. The place was so comfortable. There was always something to do, and in your time off you can take the bikes (or the car!) down to the beach or to the surrounding mountains, or just relax in the yard or the lounge. The nearby villages also had incredible food if you ever wanted to eat out, which honestly was pretty rare because the food was so good. At night we would all hang out and do puzzles or watch movies or just talk. The people there are so awesome and of course the animals too who were always around for a cuddle. It was such a fulfilling two weeks and a very grounding experience after travelling non stop. Thank you, we can't wait to be back one day 😌🫶

It was a total pleasure to have Sam and Abi stay with us for a good couple of weeks this summer and I can highly recommend them to anyone looking to host. They showed initiative, seeing what needed to be done and offered help for a wide variety of tasks, whether it be, cooking, cleaning, meticulously laying wood for hugelkulture beds, lime rendering, transporting chickens, and more. Both Sam and Abi are precise in all they do and have exquisite attention to detail. Silvan built a strong bond with both Sam and Abi and talks of them regularly, we both hope they will be able to make it back to visit us one day.

My time here was honestly amazing! It was my first volunteering experience and I couldn’t have chosen a better place! I met so many great people and made real friends. It quickly started to feel like home. At first, I was planning to stay just two weeks, but I ended up staying a whole month because I loved it so much. The work is super chill and easy to get used to and it doesn’t even feel like you’re working most of the time, because you’re always surrounded by good vibes and great people. I’ll definitely miss everyone a lot, but I’m leaving with beautiful memories and friendships that I’ll carry with me. I’m sure I’ll come back one day! Thank you for everything 💛

Prerna stayed with us for about 4 weeks in August. She is a wonderful house guest, and adapted well to life at our center. During her stay here, she helped on a variety of tasks such as forestry, vegetation management, gardening, and general chores around the center. She works hard, and asks questions for clarification if needed. We very much enjoyed hanging out with her and getting to know her more and had many great conversations. We highly recommend Prerna to any future workaway hosts, and feel very fortunate that we were able to host her this last August. Wishing her all the best in her travels and adventures.
