I stayed with Yeldos and family for a week and it was one of the best things I've experienced in my short time in Kazakhstan and I'm glad I didn't let the cold deter my decision to come. Both him and Gulnara are very hospitable and friendly hosts and take effort to make sure you're ok. From the first day, Yeldos was the man with the plan, coming up with the week's schedule so there's clarity on what work needs to be done. There's plenty of work to be done and the jobs vary so it's never really boring and I was kept well fed with plenty of tea. Collecting eggs is a twice daily affair but that's never a boring task as the chickens are lovely. The yurt does get cold at night at the end of the year but with proper thermal clothes and with the blankets, it's warm and cosy for a good sleep. It's a nice quiet village, plenty of time to sit and chat over tea with Yeldos and his wife. Overall I really recommend this place to others who enjoy purposeful work, conversations and peace from the city. Thanks again Yeldos and Gulnara for showing what great Kazakh hospitality is like.

I spent about 2 weeks volunteering at the hostel in October and had a fantastic time! Since it was off-season there weren't many guests and the tasks varied from day to day. Sometimes it was some gardening or cleaning or we helped the neighbor picking their olives. In general the work was easy and enjoyable and Dean always explained everything very well beforehand, so it was clear from the beginning what was expected of you. The daily shared dinners with Dean and Steffi and the other volunteers and guests helped to make it feel like a family after only a short time. I already miss this place and the amazing people I met there. I highly recommend staying with Dean and Steffi and volunteering at this hostel. They are fantastic hosts. Thank you so much for having me!!

I stayed in Balqash for about five weeks in August-September 2025. I was exceedingly well looked-after by Lena and Viktor, who were amazing hosts, and Anna was also very kind and very easy to communicate with. The teaching itself was very engaging and getting to work with students of a variety of ages and ability levels was a real privilege. The staff at the language centre were all welcoming and easy to get along with. As for Balqash itself - it is a small, somewhat remote city but it's certainly not without its charm, and the lake is a great feature, especially if you're there during the warmer part of the year. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who is passing through KZ :)

I stayed around 16 days with Kaja, Joshi, Sami, and Spirit in Hamburg. They are a kind and interesting family, and I appreciated being welcomed into their home. The main daily tasks include waking up the younger boy in the morning, cleaning the house and garden, doing laundry, and helping with dinner preparation. The routine can change from day to day, so being adaptable is helpful. It’s a good place for someone who doesn’t mind early mornings and can organize their work independently. During the rest of the day, when I wasn’t helping with tasks, I spent time on my writing, and Kaja was kind enough to provide a separate room for that, which I really appreciated. I didn’t walk Spirit because she was a bit sensitive after the loss of the other dog, but she’s gentle and sweet to be around. Kaja is respectful and straightforward in communication. Sometimes the tasks are arranged quite loosely, so it’s useful to check in regularly about priorities or weekend plans. She’s open to discussion, and the check-in/check-out times are flexible when you coordinate ahead. The boys are polite and kind, and if you speak German, it’s a nice chance to practice. If you’re interested in yoga or spirituality, you’ll probably have thoughtful conversations with Kaja.

Sharon originally planned to stay with us for just a week, but somehow that week turned into over a month! She really became part of our family, and luckily she had plenty of time to fully immerse herself. Sharon is super organized and detail, oriented, she plans everything thoughtfully, and we learned so much from her approach. She’s hardworking, kind, and brings such a positive energy that it’s hard not to enjoy having her around. Honestly, it’s hard to put into words how amazing she is. We’re sure she’ll be back someday, and any host would be lucky to have her!

Florian stayed with me in my off-grid Yukon cabin for several months and was a wonderful help! He’s hardworking, very capable, thoughtful, and finds solutions to issues. He took great care of my sled dogs, the dogs loved him, and he kept the cabins and dog yard running smoothly in the winter – which can be quite the job in Northern Canada’s winter! He also is happy to lend a hand and offered his help to me many times. I also appreciated how respectful Florian was of my privacy and my space, which made living with him easy. Life out here in a remote cabin in Yukon in the winter can be tough, but he adapted very well and brought positive energy every day. Even my shy retiree dog, Lulu, adopted Florian and stayed in his cabin once in a while :) I would very happily host Florian again (in fact, I asked him to come back already!) and I would recommend him in a heartbeat to anyone looking for a workawayer. The dogs and I are grateful for all his help!

I had a great time hosting Estelle. She's a dedicated Workawayer and a beautiful person. During her 20-day stay, we shared many wonderful moments — cooking, sharing meals, and working together. She's sincere, hardworking, and delightful. She created two beautiful wall paintings at my place, putting a great amount of love and effort into them. It’s been an amazing experience overall, and I’d be happy to welcome her back anytime. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours and all the happiness and success on your journey ahead, Estelle!

Marc left the house last afternoon and Ganesha and I already miss him. Marc is a fantastic young man, His stay was around one month and during his stay, he was enjoying every thing, always happy and so attentive to me, doing everything for me. And Marc is a great painter: he renovated all the doors, windows, shutters without paint stains on the floor or on the windows. He really did a great job. "les Coquelicots" are completely rejuvenated. Marc did our cooking and his soups was great. Thank you so much, Mark ,for your great help. The last thing : I have never seen the bedroom and bathroom so clean. Thank you Marc for all you did for me; you will be always welcome. We miss you.

Kaat and Ben are a lovely couple who stayed with us for a month in July 2025. It was an absolute pleasure to have them here. They are kind, respectful, and easy to communicate with, making every interaction enjoyable. Both showed great initiative and responsibility in their work, completing tasks efficiently and with care. Beyond their skills, Kaat and Ben brought a wonderful energy to the place — always positive, considerate, and engaging with everyone around them. They were a perfect fit to our yoga community. I highly recommend them for any future hosts or projects. Their skills, reliability, and pleasant personalities make them an asset wherever they go

Tom and I (Amelia) stayed on Mark and Irene’s beautiful property for just under 3 weeks and as our first workaway, we were blown away! Mark and Irene were absolutely fabulous hosts that made us feel welcome from day dot. We learnt a lot about Canadian culture and geography along with some extremely practical farming skills. Mark and Irene are super patient and understanding regarding skill levels and were very accomodating on all fronts. We felt very comfortable in our own little cabin with everything we needed and more. Their pets and animals are super gentle and loving. The food cooked and provided was fantastic and diverse. We cannot recommend this workaway more and thank you for being such a memorable part of our Canada experience.

Mahesh and his family were so kind, they welcomed my housebound and I into their home, with the warmest hearts. They made sure we never would miss anything. We had a lot of nice evenings with the whole family, where we were playing cards with lots of laughs. Their family showed us so many local things and traditions, which was very nice to experience, and we really enjoyed. I had a lot of fun teaching the kids at the school, and Mahesh came up with different subjects I could talk with the students about.

Vic and Alex were our first workaway guests, and they sure have set the bar high! They are both so kind, hard-working and fun, it was a joy being able to host them. They were constantly looking for ways to help us, so proactive in finding work to do even when we felt they ought to take a break! Their visit was cut short because of a family emergency, but we are so grateful that they chose to stay with our family and help out so much even in such a short span. We really loved getting to know them both and learning about their lives in Belgium. Our home is always open and we hope our paths will cross again soon! Thanks for everything Vic and Alex, and all the best for the adventures to come!!

I had such an amazing experience at the language school! Veronica made me and the other volunteer feel at home right away. She was always super kind and made sure we were having the best time in Latacunga, often checking in to see if everything was going well. It was my first time working as an English teacher, and I absolutely loved it. The kids and the other teachers are all so friendly and open to meeting new people. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys working with children and wants to spend some time in a safe and welcoming environment.

First of all, a huge thank you to Ewen and Lesley for their warm welcome! They made us feel comfortable from day one and really helped us gain confidence in speaking English. It was our first Workaway experience, and we couldn't have dreamed of anything better. This was also our very first stop in Australia, and it was incredible! We were immediately immersed in Australian culture and had the chance to share wonderful moments with Ewen and Lesley's family, which allowed us to practice our English even more and discover some beautiful places. We also really enjoyed working alongside Ewen, who patiently shared his skills with us on many tasks - building a rooftop, renovating a deck, painting, and more. We shared so many great moments and are leaving with amazing memories: board game nights, long meal conversations, the sailing trip, the koala sanctuary visit, and the animal dinner! The location of their property is another big plus - it offers a stunning view over the forest and is only 30 minutes from Brisbane. The domestic and wild animals are also part of its charm (kisses to all of them, even Diesel, haha!). We can only recommend living this experience with Ewen and Lesley - two truly wonderful people with big hearts and always in a good mood! Thank you so much! Emmy & Matteo

I started my volunteering journey at this Hostel, and I couldn’t have chosen a better place! They welcomed me with open arms, and I immediately felt at home. The hosts are absolutely amazing people who always have an open ear for you and help you whenever they can. The tasks were easy and just as described in the profile. I can definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to spend a few weeks in a really chill environment and is interested in surfing, as there are many surf schools in town.

Sofie and Kasper were absolutely outstanding workawayers during their five-day stay. They immediately integrated themselves into our home and family life, becoming cherished, temporary members of our family. Their warmth and genuine friendliness were evident from the start. They dedicated their evenings to playing card games with my family, creating a wonderful nightly bonding tradition. They truly made the effort to connect with everyone. Sofie was an incredible asset to my teaching. She patiently helped my students practice their English, making a significant and positive impact on their confidence in class. On a personal level, she went above and beyond when she took my daughter to the beach for a long day out and even coached her swimming, proving herself to be an excellent swimmer and a dedicated mentor. We shared a memorable day out seeing the Blow Hole. Beyond their wonderful work ethic, Sofie and Kasper demonstrated great thoughtfulness and generosity, bringing sweets for the entire family. They were lovely guests, approaching all tasks and situations with a positive attitude and making no complaints at all. My children loved their affection and were truly sad to say goodbye. We highly recommend Sofie and Kasper to any host family—they are responsible, engaging, and a joy to have around. We would welcome them back without hesitation!

What a wonderful couple. Both Ricci and Femke were very easy to get along with. Ricci has many skills, some include hand tools, logistics, organisation, problem solving, communication. His strength and height were both useful with the varied work that needed doing. Femke also had exceptional communication skills, problem solving and organisation. They stayed in an onsite van for 7 weeks and it was kept clean and tidy. They are both polite and considerate and are a great asset to anyone needing help around the property or any available paid work. I wish you both well in your travels. Until we meet again!

Jess and Jazz are extremely competent, especially for their age. They have positive energy and lift the spirits of people and animals alike. They are great cooks, are excellent animal caretakers, and know basic framing and other construction skills. They are both quick learners, and any Workaway host will be lucky to have them visit! They are welcome back here any time and will be greatly missed!
