Hello! My name is Margaux, I'm 24.
I have an environmental lawyer background and I want to become a researcher in this field, so I'm on my way to the PhD :-) Meanwhile I want to travel in Europe by train and bus (more environmental friendly) to meet new people, discover cultures and landscapes. I love sports (basketball), music, animals, cooking, chilling, playing, being outside... I enjoy company but I also like to be alone sometimes.
Now, I'm home after a beautiful trip to Georgia with my friend Lisa. I had workaway experiences in every country i crossed to go there and i was very cool and diverse (farmstay, babysitting, tourism...). For this summer, I would like to share something similar with my sister.

I have a lawyer background.
I love sports and I have been a basketball coach for children and youngsters (as well as referee).
During my previous volunteering, I've been working a lot outside as part of diverse environmental projects (cleaning bushes, clearing hiking trails, cleaning ponds, planting trees, harvesting...) and a bit inside (renovation work).
I like to cook and bake. I can also play the guitar, I like to draw, read, and share about that !

Margo and her friend Lisa stayed at my place for the duration of a little bit more than a week. (This was already one exception I made for them, as I normally don't accept people for less than two weeks.) From their first day, I tried to make them feel welcome and secure, show them around, and spend quality time with them, together with performing… read more the tasks that needed to be done. I picked them up from Limenaria and left them at Prinos port with my car. I showed them a secret cave and a natural swimming pool where we hiked after driving in the car. I showed them around Thassos old town and ancient ruins where I took them with me, while at the same time trying to do what work had to be done.

When they left my place, I was happy about their work (Margo has explained quite analytically all the work they did) but quite sour because they didn't seem to have enjoyed my hosting and the experience I provided for them.

Indeed, they were quite efficient at working, cleaning, and cooking. However, as I don't consider Workaway a strictly work-based exchange, I felt far from the good experiences we shared with other people during their stay at my place. Sadly, Margo (and Lisa) seemed very shut to themselves and didn't engage in conversation with the host or propose common activities for the duration of their stay. Seeing this lack of enthusiasm, curiosity, and social interaction, made me sometimes wonder if I made a good choice into having them there with me.

And I still wouldn't mind, if it wasn't for their remarks and complaints (mostly on the last few days, and afterwards in Margo's review) that I have to admit hurt my feelings as host, although I understand and accept them, and believe have been useful to me and my future in this site.

Since Margo (and Lisa) were the first Workawayers that I accepted ever (and the third to come to my place) I didn't have quite yet the experience to determine the probability of success of this exchange. Therefore I would have liked it if they put a little more effort into clarifying things of importance to them (sleeping arrangements, work schedule, cooking and eating, other expectations, etc.) before their arrival, and before agreeing to come to my place in the first place. This would have definitely resulted in a better experience for everyone. This is a piece of overall advice I could give them for their future stays, and for other hosts as well.

In conclusion: my lack of experience as a host made this an emotionally difficult experience for me, although I believe that both the host (me) and the girls (Margo & Lisa) are good people, this didn't turn out to be a very pleasant experience in the end, except for some bright moments that I can say I have genuinely enjoyed with them (as playing a round of their table card game "the Mind", and hiking and swimming in Giola natural pool during their first day), and the indisputably good work they did. I wish Margo and Lisa all the best and a safe and beautiful journey to Georgia.

I spent 9 days at Alex's place in April with my friend Lisa. I have mixed feelings regarding this experience.

First, it is not super clear on the profile but the bedroom is shared with Alex and it is like 50 cm between the two beds.

For the work, Alex was not very easy-going with breaks and working conditions, which was kind of an issue… read more because I was sick half of the week. The main job we did was digging around the olive trees to give fertilizer and compost, and digging for the creation of 2 vegetable gardens. I was checking the working time and taking breaks when needed because it was not to be expected from him to say something regarding this. This felt sometimes very far from the Workaway spirit because except the last day, I don't think I heard any "thank you" or "please". However Alex accepted when we asked to work our 5 hours in a row in the morning

We did some other small tasks and one day was dedicated to cleaning the house. Indeed, the house was not very clean when we arrived (one hour of dishes, beer on the floor, dead insects on the bathroom sink and the drain was full so impossible to take a shower inside). It felt like Alex was waiting for volunteers to do some basic cleaning, which was pretty unpleasant. We never did less than 5 hours. The first day was more 6/7 hours and we had to clarify that, which was pretty new for us (same for counting hours) because we are used to a more smooth functioning and not counting.

We were cooking most of the time for everyone (not counted as working time). The kitchen is nice and we had good products. The location is very nice, the island is beautiful. There's a lot of potential for walks after the working time. For the days-off, it was kind of weird. On Monday, Alex took us to the market and for some sightseeing in Thassos city. It was just our second day and we didn't really talk about it at that time. But around 13h he told us he would come back to pick us up around 20h. Hopefully we had money, water and jackets, but it was very surprising. We understood after discussion with him that it was counted as a day-off, but we would have appreciated to make it clear before because we would have probably chosen another day to do something else.

Overall, I really missed the volunteering spirit and felt sometimes more like a worker and a cook rather than a volunteer (we talked about that and Alex said he was relying on us a lot for cooking because the previous workawayers couldn't cook, same for cleaning, and we felt like it was pretty unfair). Unfortunately I feel like the good times I had on Thassos Island were very independent from Alex. We have very different mindsets and hobbies so we didn't really connect. But Alex is open for discussions about the experience, which is positive. I wish him all the best.

Margaux is very nice and kind, she helped us a lot during her stay, especially she cooked wonderful French food and dessert, and spend a lot of time playing with Danbao.
