Description

Hi! My name is Maya. I am 18 years old, fresh out of high school and currently taking a gap year. This year (2021/2022) I will be travelling in Canada as well as abroad (Asia and Europe mostly). I am excited to volunteer, explore, and eat some good food. I am passionate about sustainability, activism, and health. I have been vegan for 2 years, and am part of many local activism groups. I look forward to meeting lots of new cool people and exploring the world.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

While I like to think I have many skills, most of my experience is within the realm of child care and organic produce. I have had multiple jobs in both these fields.
Child care:
I currently have my Standard first aid certification and am Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross certified. These are both certifications that allow me to work safely not only with children but everyone! This summer I worked as a camp counsellor at a sleep-away camp where I was the co caregiver to 12 children. While I previously have had lots of experience taking care of children this job was something that truly enhanced my problem-solving abilities and expanded my ability to properly care for children. I have also had experience working with children on the spectrum as well as newborns.
Organic Produce:
While in high school I had two main jobs. Firstly, for two years I was a cashier at a certified Organic whole foods store. There I learnt a lot about the buying and selling of produce as well as how to store and keep its quality. This job also enhanced my people skills as I had many challenging customers that I would be faced with daily. Secondly, I worked for a fruit distribution company. This company taught me so much about produce variety, quality, and growth. The people I met through this organization had so much knowledge on organic farming to share with me, that truly enhanced the way I see our food system. With this knowledge, I started the gardening program at my school. This program educated students and faculty on how to grow their own food at home! With the produce grown, we were able to donate to our local food bank and provide some extra snacks for students! I am so passionate about living and eating sustainably and am eager to learn more.
Other:
Some other experiences that have grown my skill set are volunteering within the homeless community of Downtown Eastside Vancouver, supporting Holocaust survivors, and joining a local sustainability education and action group.

All of my experiences have given me such unique skills and mentalities. I work well with others, am hardworking, easy-going, and passionate.
