  • Description

Hi there! It’s Sidney here :) while Alicia works on setting up the rest of our profile I’ve been tasked with the writing. So here goes nothing!

A little bit about us: we’re two sisters who left our Reno, Nevada home at the end of May 2023 to make our way through South East Asia. We hope to come to Malaysia next, slow down a bit, and find a hostel/ homestay that we can contribute to and invest some of our time in.

I have worked in hospitality for 8 years! It’s a joy being able to create a memorable experience for others. Working in a fine dining restaurants has taught me how to communicate with guests and make them feel welcomed.

Alicia has worked in hospitality for many years as well. At home, she taught pottery classes and managed the ceramic studio. From organizing events to doing creative projects, she would love to use her skills at a hostel/ home stay!

I graduated just about two years ago with my bachelor's degree in English and Business and Alicia is currently working on her degree in Philosophy and Environmental Studies. We are both very hard workers and make sure to put 100% effort into any task we are assigned. After six months of traveling and consuming foods and wonderful accommodations, we would like to contribute and put in some work for a project.

We love to learn, explore, and experience new things! See you soon hopefully! :)

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

You’re probably wondering what we already know how to do, what we can do to contribute to your projects, what we already have experience in, etc. That’s fair, I’d be wondering the same thing if I were considering allowing two random strangers to come live and work with me for a while. I’ll break it down as quickly as I can:

Alicia has worked and stayed at a couple of permaculture farm stays already (in Thailand, Turkey, and Costa Rica) and loved it so much that she decided to cultivate the sweetest vegetable garden in our parents' backyard with a focus on maintaining soil health while maximizing crop abundance. There has been more kale, asparagus, radishes, and rainbow chard than our family of 7 can eat for the better part of two years now and it is GLORIOUS. More recently, she started raising quail for their meat and eggs with a good friend of hers, making family dinner night more interesting than ever before!

As for me, I’ve spent the past 6 and a half years working in restaurants, cafés, hotels, and casinos to put myself through university. For 4 and a half of those years, I’ve worked in a fine-dining Italian restaurant as a server and I think it’s fair to say that I’ve become well-versed in the art of hospitality and tourism. At home, I spend quite a bit of time working with fermented foods in the form of pickles, yogurt, and kombucha (I’m a firm believer in the double fermentation method). I had a sourdough starter for a while but it died before I could muster up the courage to put it to use… I’ve also been learning carpentry and cabinetry from my dad and from a local workshop that I joined a few months before leaving on this trip so that I could build and upgrade the furniture in my apartment to better fit the space. I’m not stellar at it (yet), but I’m having a blast learning the different ways I can build and create things!

Both of us have worked in several industries outside of what I’ve mentioned above including digital and social media marketing, technical and creative copywriting, creative studio management, and elementary education tutoring. We learn quickly, adapt to new environments easily, and we’ve become really good at being able to occupy and entertain ourselves when we don’t have any specific tasks or projects to complete. We hope to be able to share the skills that we’ve already acquired while picking up some new ones along the way!
