Come and help us rebuild a 100 year old stone church on Likoma Island, on beautiful Lake Malawi in Africa.
Sadly the old stone church, built in the late 1800s, and the heart of this small community, was declared structurally unsafe and had to be dismantled.
Nkwazi village are rebuilding it, but would like help with the more intricate stonework.
In return for your stone working skills, you will stay in our beautiful village on the shores of this freshwater lake and be welcomed into the Warm Heart of Africa.
The lake is teaming with wildlife and offers some of the best diving in Africa.
If you want to extend your trip, Malawi is safe and easy to explore - go on safari, hike in the mountains, kayaking, sailing, mountain biking... we’ve got it all. Look forward to hearing from you
Bricolage et projets de construction
You will be living on a small island in an authentic rural fishing community. Likoma is unchanged by western ways and the islanders are keen to learn and show you their culture.
We are looking for stone masons and anyone experienced in working with granite. The original church had gothic window and door arches which we would like to replicate in the new build.
The original stone is onsite and we would really like to teach the locals new skills whilst rebuilding their church.
We have basic tools on site and lots of enthusiasm, but the more intricate and professional tools would need to be brought in with you.
English is widely spoken on the island and there are plenty of people here who would like to learn from you.
We have photos of the original church and the backing of the local diocese.
Your accommodation will be in a comfortable hut on the beach. We have fresh fish from the lake and veg in abundance grown in our veg garden on site.
Your hut is comfortable and functional with a bed, mozzie net and safe storage. There are push bikes for you to use when you want to explore the island and 4G signal when you need to be in touch with friends and family.
Life on Likoma is peaceful and friendly. The island is small (9 x3 miles) and easy to get around.
There are 13 villages on the island, a cottage hospital, the largest cathedral in the whole of Africa and 3 schools. There are numerous community projects going on for you to join in - everything from tree-planting and permaculture to arts & crafts design.
There are flights on and off the island if you need them, or you can travel here on the Illala ferry which has been serving the lake community for years. There are 2 hotels and a backpackers as well as local bars for you to enjoy.
This is a rural African community where everyone helps each other. Likoma is a small, friendly island paradise and we look forward to seeing you soon
