Description
Here in The Fabulous Dordogne (South West France) I have a beautiful fair sized Town House. My Large Village of Saint Cyprien has it's own Train Station and the house is in easy walking distance of all shopping amenities. The Train can take you directly to Bordeaux and Sarlat (nearest city, 20 mins away). Saint Cyprien is situated on the hillside above the River Dordogne and makes a perfect base for visiting the world famous caves, beautiful villages and lovely scenery that this section of the Dordogne is famous for. It has a beautiful old town centre which winds uphill towards the 12th century bell tower and the abbey church which dominates the area.
I am a British woman living amongst a small community of friends here in the Dordogne. I know the area well and came here originally 11 years ago. I speak almost fluent in French. I purchased this town house 18 months ago, and started to renovate it with my long-term partner whom I lost to illness somewhat recently. As much as I am fairly capable, I really need help in order to finish this project, and would love to work with someone who could help me realise it's potential.
I have a nine-year-old West Highland terrier called Max, who is a very sweet and kind little creature and certainly nothing to be afraid of. And in my neighbourhood I have many friends from all over the world.
There are loads of restaurants and bars and a number of boutiques. Equally a large supermarket and Commercial centre - The Village is right on the River Dordogne, where many walk, jog, cycle and Canoe. The tourist information office is in the high street and along with information and help happily given by me - they can give you a very detailed advise and a useful map for exploring the old town an indeed the whole area.
However, there are many, Many other things to see and do in the region - and further afield using our excellent train service that connects across the whole of France - MARVELLOUS PARIS being only 3 hours 30 mins away! You could easily do this in your weekends off.
The Valley of the Dordogne developed because of the importance of the river as a transport route and trade originally developed around the wood and leather industries. But, it's importance on the World's map is that The Dordogne region of France has literally hundreds of caves, many of them open for the public to visit. There are many world heritage sites - The most important of all being Lascaux - The most important in France, if not the world and is one of the highlights of a trip to the Dordogne. France's Largest Unesco Site is just a few minutes up the road.
IMPORTANTLY, what ever you chose to do in this wonderful area, it's difficult not to be seduced by it's fabulous Beauty and entrenched history that is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get to know. Below I list further information concerning the prehistoric sites and caves that can be accessed and viewed during your visit:
Equally There is : La Roque Saint Christophe -
About halfway between Le Bugue and Montignac is the troglodyte town of La Roque Saint Christophe which occupies a fabulous position about 90 meters above the River Vezere.
This enormous shelter was once home to an entire village and as you walk along it you can see remains of the forge and the church etc.
Gouffre de Proumeyssac, caves in Dordogne, France:
Near Le Bugue, the caves at Proumeyssac are highly renowned. The main feature is the enormous 'Cathedral of Crystal' - a stunning, huge and beautifully lit cavern. You can pay extra and enter by a the same method as the original visitors - a suspended basket, now motorised but originally lowered by a horse.
The caves are expertly lit to highlight the spectacular rock formations.
As well as the caves there is a picnic area, a bookshop and bar and a forest trail and a geological area. For more information visit Gouffre de Proumeyssac.
Les Grottes de Maxange
Newly discovered in 2000, these caves at Le Buisson de Cadouin are now open to the public. Special focus has been given to the lighting of the formations of the spectacular rock formations.
These caves have thousands of very unusual formations - formed by capillary action rather than dripping water, these curious formations twist and turn in all directions.
Gouffre de Padirac
The Gouffre de Padirac is our favourite natural cave in the Dordogne area. The cave is entered by boat.
Grotte de Villars
A great spectacle of lighting and water bring these caves to life, and truly show the various rock formations at their best. There are also renowned prehistoric paintings, including an unusual painting of a person (usually only animals were painted in prehistoric paintings) to see.
Grotte de Cougnac at Payrignac
This has both a natural cave with a ceiling of very fine stalactites and a cave with prehistoric paintings. It is 18km from Sarlat.
Les Eyzies de Tayac
Because there are so many caves in the Les Eyzies region that I would have to tell you about them 'face to face'
Grotte de Domme
These caves are underneath the village of Domme allowing you to visit the caves and visit one of France's most beautiful villages.
Troglodyte houses at Belves
Underneath the main square of Belves there is a troglodyte village which is very interesting to visit and Belves is also one of France's most beautiful villages.
Troglodyte Fort at La Roque Gageac
These are cliff side dwellings, dating from the 12th century, rather than underground caverns, and are found 40 metres up the cliffs at La Roque-Gageac on the Dordogne River.
Grotte de Rouffignac (Cave of a Hundred Mammoths)
An electric train takes you into a cavern where you will find engravings of mammoths, rhinocerous, horses and bison.
Grotte des Merveilles at Rocamadour
This cave contains both prehistoric drawings and stalactites and stalagmites. It is also near to the historic town of Rocamadour, one of the key sites of France.
Grotte de Lacave
This natural cave is entered on a small electric train taking you to a large cave with an impressive display of stalactites and stalagmites. Lacave is near to Martel and Souillac.
The landscape consists of steep wooded hills climbing up both sides of the river valley, with small picturesque villages both in the valley itself (eg Brivezac and Saulieres) and also nestling deep in the ‘side valleys’ (eg Neuville and Albussac). The countryside is largely unspoiled and there are many traditional houses and smallholdings to admire as you explore.
HOWEVER, what ever you chose to do in the wonderful area, it's difficult not to be seduced by it's fabulous Beauty and entrenched history that is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get to know.

As a cultural exchange, I'm happy to teach you French or English, Cooking, French/International/Indian and 'home making' skills - But, in general, I cannot think of a better area to be in order to absorb and learn about life and history of France. Aide
I lost my partner to illness a little while ago. We were restoring this Charming Townhouse together. So far completed is the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. I need help with laying floor tiles, General decorating, sanding down and revarnishing old staircases, and if you're capable of doing plumbing...... that would be a fabulous plus as I intend to put a large bathroom into the third floor. Some of the glass needs changing in the windows and depending on how long you were staying, I would like to do some re-rendering at the front and side of house. During certain works I'm happy to work together as a team as I can be very adaptable. I've had to be LOL

As a guest working with me in my home you will have your own Beautiful bedroom with large flat screen TV. This room is recently finished. Next door to your room is the bathroom with shower and toilet. Your amenities are on your own floor with use of your own sitting room. There is fast, unlimited internet throughout the 3 floored house that you can use at your leisure. The house has access to both English and French TV, with a small number of other language speaking channels. I love to cook - and thank goodness, the large fully fitted Kitchen was finished a little while ago. I personally enjoy all types of food from around the world. If you have any special needs or requirements then I'm happy to accommodate them. I have many friends who don't eat meat so I'm used to it. If you too are a keen cook then you would be welcome take over the kitchen from time to time. I would offer you three meals a day - and a cookie jar for those moments of indulgence that all of us have from time to time. Whilst you are staying I'm happy to purchase any of your toiletries that you require during my weekly shop and equally I'm happy to do your laundry whilst doing mine. Everything that you need to make your stay as comfortable (within reason) during your stay will be provided by me for you. I also have unlimited telephone dialling to most parts of the world should you need to stay in touch by the good old fashioned telephone line. I have no interest in exploiting you as a 'worker' I would see you more as a guest that is helping me finish off this house.

So... as I mention in other sections there are plenty of things to do in this very historical area: Firstly - the village has a train station, in one direction it goes to Sarlat (local City 20 mins away) and in the other direction it stops at various towns before ending up in Bordeaux - a Major and important city and wine capital of France. It is at Bordeaux that you make the change of train for Paris - the whole journey can be done in 3 hours and 30 mins door to door. There is a bus system but I have to say that I've not actually used it. There are 32 markets in the surrounding towns and villages nearby. There are two in the village here, the Sunday one being the biggest in the entire area of the Dordogne and is world renowned for it's diversity of products that can be reasonably purchased. In Sarlat there is a fair sized Cinema and a couple of nightclubs plus many cafes and bars.
There is good shopping to be had in Bergerac (45 mins away) and Perigeux (55 mins away) both of which have Museums and Cultural Centres.
Cycling is a great way to get around... I have a bike that can be borrowed
The village of Saint Cyprien is on the River Dordogne and has great walks, Cycle paths and good jogging routes. There is a gym nearby and Tennis courts. I have a lot of friends that play tennis here. There is a Yoga group and I go on a weekly 'Hike' with a group of Americans each Sunday that you would be more than welcome to join me on if you wished. It is true to say that this is not a city centre, it is semi rural France but has much to do if you know where to look - I would be happy to do what ever I could to make sure that you were able to do as much and get as much out of your stay here as possible, especially during your time off.
What ever you chose to do in this wonderful area, it's difficult not to be seduced by it's Fabulous Beauty and Entrenched History that is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get to know. Taking you from 'Richard the Lionheart' 'The one Hundred year War' to the emergence of the European modern Tobacco Industry started just a few meters from my house until the end of the 70's. Basically, in a nutshell, you will have every opportunity to do something different each week. In the section about 'How you could benefit from your cultural exchange and visit here' I listed further information concerning the prehistoric sites and caves that can be accessed and viewed during your visit including the World Heritage Sites and UNESCO centres.
