    Description

Hi Workawayers! We're Merry (30) and Mike (29) after spending a year travelling and work-awaying our way around the world we've made a home in Lancaster in the north of England. We're excited to welcome fellow travellers from around the world. A bit more about us: we're both teachers and Merry does a PhD at the moment too. We like kayaking, hiking, board games, music, and most of all cuddling our three guinea pigs (Parsley, Nanook and Hester Haystack). We're both veggie and so if you're a big carnivore maybe best to look elsewhere!

    The area?
Lancaster is a beautiful historic student town overflowing with cafes, pubs and nightlife. It's a short cycle to the seaside (we have bikes which you're welcome to borrow) and there are wonderfully bleak moors all around. The famous Lake District is a 40 minute train ride away too or 1 hour to Manchester if you fancy a big city. We live right next to the canal from which you can reach the lovely river Lune by foot or kayak (we have two which you're welcome to borrow).

From our experience workawaying, we've found clarity is key. The exchange would involve a maximum of 4 hours work for 5 days a week. We're also looking for people who want to stay 1-2 weeks. We can't host stays for longer than this unfortunately. We both work full time so you may need to work independently sometimes.

    The work?
The big job this spring is fence painting but there are lots of other bits and bobs needing doing in the garden. We have a large garden, with veg plot and a number of planting outdoor projects in mind. We'd like to recreate something we contributed to on our travels with creative painting on doors, so any artists very welcome!

Some indoor work may be needed (painting, building some shelving, window cleaning (we did a lot on our travels!), cleaning out the Guinea-pig, cooking etc.

As well as this, we live close to Merrys parents so we may ask if you'd be able to help out with projects in their garden with too, and also get to know the family!

Contact us if you're keen. Please tell us your favourite animal in the subject line to prove you've read our information. :) We know that travelling in the era of COVID is difficult and uncertain but get in touch and hopefully we can work something out. Our main availability is in april, may this year.

We can show you a bit of classic British culture (mostly drinking tea) in a historic English town.

What could you do with your time off?
You can walk from our house (15 minutes) into the centre of Lancaster and enjoy the pub, cinema or other cultural events. We're a 25 minute cycle the seaside in Morecambe and there are many bus stops near our house that could take you to Morecambe or nearby villages. There's a leisure centre with swimming pool and badminton courts about 15 minutes cycle away. There are many walks from the doorstep and wild swimming options in the River Lune or Morecambe bay (have to check tide times).

In need of the big city or dramatic mountains? Then we're walking distance to the train station from where you can be in Manchester (train 1 hr) or Windermere in the Lake District (train 30 minutes). We'll try to give you 2 consecutive days off so that you could even stay overnight, and we can recommend hostels and activities.

It's good if you're independent as whilst we're keen to recommend things to do, you'll need to also be ok to entertain yourself in some of your free time as we may be working! :)

We're both trained as teachers so happy to help speak/teach English. We both speak moderate French and would love to practice and learn from you. Our German is pretty bad but we can try and practice. Mike thinks he can speak some Spanish... let's see!

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

Private room in our little home. There's a bathroom next door that you'd get the main use of, as we have a separate shower room too. Our house has enough space that you can have your own time and space too.

We think of you as part of the family and we like to share meals with workawayers and we're keen to share the cooking out; you don't have to be an amazing chef but we'd love to try something you make one or two evenings. We also enjoy watching a film together, playing board games, chatting, taking guests to the pub. We also know that everyone needs their own space and so it's cool to spend some time doing your own thing too (and we might also occasionally do likewise!)

We're veggies so if you can't live without meat then this probably isn't the best place for you.
We'd provide food for meals but it's usually best to bring your own snacks.
