I am located 90 miles South of Juneau in the remote island village of Kake. Kake is home the Tlingit Native Americans and 80% of the 450 residents here are native. The village is subsistence-based, meaning a majority of the food is hunted, fished, or gathered here. We have no bars, restaurants, or coffee shops. There is one grocery store and we get restocked once a week by barge service.

To get here is a 45 min. flight from Juneau with flights daily or you can take the Alaska Ferry from Bellingham 3 nights traveling through the inside passage, a beautiful adventure.

We have bikes and a car for exploring the road system. There are infinite opportunities for camping and outdoor recreating. I spend a lot of time on the water, and have kayaks and skiffs available to use as well as fishing gear, crab and shrimp pots. A majority of our food comes from the sea: halibut, salmon, rockfish, cod, octopus, prawns, crab, clams, cockles, oysters, mussles, seaweed, kelp, etc... You would have many opportunities to learn how to harvest and process gathered food. In the fall there are also many types of mushrooms to be enjoyed for food and medicine along with many other types of plants and herbs found in the Tongass Forest.

We live a very communal life. There's lots of meal and food sharing, general task sharing, music playing and more. Summer is the very best time to be in Alaska and we'd love to share Kake with anyone who is interested in coming for 2 or more weeks.

    The work:
I'm looking for someone to help 4 hours a day with chores, gardening and building projects. I also own and operate a sewing business and am looking for paid part time help in the shop. Sewing experience is helpful but there's lot of work otherwise.

I have a small business making waterproof bags.
There would be opportunities to work in my shop for pay starting at $10 per hour. Help would include sewing and general help. I could also use help with social media and building content to promote my business. There is also lots to do in gardens and help with canning and preserving food for the winter.
