Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron is the largest freshwater island in the world and a geological treasure, home to hundreds of wild flowers and fauna that grow nowhere else on Earth. Culturally diverse with First Nations (Ojibwe, Odawa, Pottowatomi) peoples living amongst folks from around the world. Come stay at a lovely, charming home where you'll help me with a variety of projects suitable for spring, summer and fall. I'm an artist, writer, and part time social worker. I need help with some projects, such as building a sun porch/studio (with great light for painting), building a sauna and/or a shed and a chicken coop, and growing food in an organic veggie garden. You'll have a few means of transportation so that you can tour the island on your time off (if you don't bring your own transportation), and partake in fantastic meals made from locally grown and/or raised produce. You can stay in the house in your own room, or camp (your pick). There are two dogs and a cat so please, no extra animals. A kind heart, an open mind and a sense of humor would get along wonderfully well here. There are great neighbors, lots of adventures you can take part in, musical nights ('kitchen jams'!), artistic events, nature hikes, summer theatre, Pow-wows, and many other things happening esp in the summer months. It's a beautiful, moderate climate with lots of sunshine. An ideal place and a loving home. Come alone or as a couple. I look forward to meeting you!

You'll experience an amazing part of the Earth: Manitoulin Island, with its stunning landscapes, fresh water lakes, and local culture including Indigenous (First Nations) events such as Pow-wows which feature fantastic drumming and dancing, and take place all summer long. You'll meet wonderful, friendly people. Some local farmers and artists have amazing skills and knowledge to share as well.

Mostly I require someone with building skills this year, as I have an art studio 'sun porch' I want to add to the existing house, not a big space (around the size of an average sized bedroom), as well as renovations to my mud room, a sauna outside and a moveable chicken coop for the backyard. I can use help to start raising chickens (it's my first time having a coop). I'd also love help pruning a few fruit trees and raspberry bushes, and growing veggies in the organic garden. Other projects might come to mind while you're here. I'm very open to suggestions and as an artist, really appreciate creative inspirations. I'm not a stickler regarding schedules so as long as we agree on a timeframe for a project(s), your time is your own as long as the work gets done in the approximate timeframe we've agree upon. Sometimes I'd like to go to the "big smoke" (what we call cities) such as Toronto, and would like you to look after my wonderful dogs (two: Rosie medium size rescue dog and Mishi an elderly Shitsu). It just means feeding them once/day, letting them out for a pee in the fenced in backyard when they have to go, and taking them for a walk once/day. Easy! In terms of building I love to use recycled materials and there are plenty of those around, so we'd use our imaginations when it comes to what/how to build the sun porch studio and the chicken coop. If you play music or make art yourself, you're most welcome to do so at the house as well. There are many artists & musicians in the area.

Either your own bedroom or a tent outside, or both. There is also a cabin by the water you can stay on your days off. The bedroom has desk, chair, closet space big comfy bed, and lots of light. Have your choice of a king size bed or queen. Both are very comfortable.

On your time off you can bike to lakes and rivers, or walk to the nearby Blue Jay Creek and Manitou River, as well as visit local cafe, restaurant, art galleries, stores and events that take place all summer on the island. To get to Manitoulin Island you can take a ferry from Tobermory, Ontario, which lands at South Bay Mouth on the island. I would pick you up right there, on the ferry docks. Or you can travel overland north from Toronto on Highway 69, and bypass the city of Sudbury on Highway 17 westbound. We're around 2 hours west of Sudbury. There is a landbridge on the north side of the island, in a port town called Little Current. Altogether we're a 6 or 7 hour drive from Toronto if you're traveling overland, or a 3 1/2 drive to Tobermory and 2 hour ferry ride if you take advantage of the boat. The ferry runs from mid April to Thanksgiving (in October).
