I am recently separated from my husband in Australia and am setting up my dream to run a gite/chambre d'hotes business in the beautiful Charente in France. My aim was to purchase an old stone longere but have found an old Maison de Maitre in a beautiful riverside location which I couldn't let go to someone else. I am going to establish the business as a fishing, kayaking, painting, cycling holiday gite. There is a yoga studio across the road with whom I shall coordinate retreats for guests. The location is stunning but the house needs to be renovated and on my own (and being only 5'1") I am going to struggle to finish the renovation in time for letting in August/September. Work which needs doing is general painting, tiling, decorating and gardening/landscaping. I have travelled all over the world but France is where my heart is and I love meeting people from all different cultures. I would love some young talented, hard working people to come and help me in my quest to bring this beautiful Maison de Maitre back to life so that people are able to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of this special region in France. Kayaking, Go Ape (acrobranche), swimming in the beautiful river down the road as well as my own private river frontage at the bottom of the garden to enjoy.
Mantenimiento / bricolage
You will have direct access to the beautiful River Charente and canoeing/kayaking. The housee is located in a sleepy French village with an infant and junior school up the road and a yoga studio across the road. Peace and tranquility are in abundance here with the river gently flowing at the bottom of the garden. A lovely market town with all amenities is only ten minutes away whilst there are beautiful castles, villages and walks within easy reach all with great direct rail links to Paris. Perfect for absorbing the French life and culture.
I need people who can strip wallpaper off very tall walls, painting, painting metal railings and gates, gardening and landscaping including pruning and chopping, tiling and clearing bathrooms, general maintenance on an old property.
English and French
Accommodation is in the habitable part of the house. You will have a double bedroom and a shower room with toilet and sink. There is a kitchen and living room which will be shared with me and a balcony and large garden with access to the river. Parking undercover is available. There is a washing machine and dryer for use as well as all other home comforts.
You can either cook for yourself and eat separately or I can cook meals for you, depending on how you wish to spend your time.
The market town of Ruffec is ten minutes away with markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is a canoe centre in the town where you can hire kayaks and enjoy the beautiful River Charente. There are a variety of shops, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants here. The beautiful village of Verteuil sur Charente with its imposing riverside chateau is only ten minutes away and the village is worth a visit if only to taste their famous brioches! Angouleme is 25 minutes away with its beautiful ancient ramparts set high on the hill with plenty of magnificent restaurants, bistros and cafes and has a TGV train link which will take you to Paris in two hours. Many villages along the river are worth a visit with pretty little chateaux and ancient roman towns such as Saintes, Cognac and St Jean d'Angely nearby. La Rochelle, Ile de Re, Royan, Ile d'Oleron and the beautiful Atlantic beaches are worth a visit and only an hour away. The Charente is a beautifully unspoilt area of France which is perfect for those of you who enjoy outdoor activities - fishing, kayaking, cycling and walking.
