Hello, everyone! We are an Anglo-Portuguese couple seeking to find an outstanding farm guardian (or couple) who would truly enjoy staying in our beautiful property in Vilar da Veiga, Gerês. We have plans to continue improving the land and the existing facilities and it would be amazing to find that special person or persons who are going to share this journey (or parts of it) with us.

Gerês is at the heart of the Minho region, and throughout the centuries remained a gem of unspoilt natural beauty, a borderland backdrop for migrations, invasions and trade. From the Roman settlers who allegedly discovered the medicinal properties of its spa water to German naturalist Heinrich Link in the late 18th century, many fell in love with this amazing place. Its harsh, dramatic natural scenery is not for the faint-hearted as there is nothing trivial or ordinary about it. This is a destination for those who truly wish to understand the last bastions of untouched Northern Portugal, where at each corner we feel echoes of this region’s ages-old Germanic communitarian traditions and the renowned tell-it-as-it-is candour of its inhabitants. Beyond nature lovers, this is a place for those who truly wish for an authentic immersion in the 21st century remnants of a thriving rural mountain community. As hosts with secular family roots in this region, we can provide unique access points to this rich natural and human heritage.
We are looking for an energetic, nature-loving individual/couple who would enjoy living in Northern Portugal in a rural area of breath-taking natural beauty and historical richness looking after our home and maintaining our land clean. We are seeking serious, experienced, reliable people with excellent communication skills, able to follow an agreed plan and engage with the local community in an appropriate and culturally-sensitive way. We require verifiable references, and would like to interview selected candidates via conference call before a decision is made.
Our land/farm guardian(s) will act as the custodian(s) of our property (i.e. house and land), performing all the necessary maintenance and land clearing activities. Due to the size of the property, a longer-term stay would be preferable. It is essential to have prior experience in the safe operation of relevant tools and machinery.
The property consists of nearly 1 hectare of arable land within the boundaries of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, in Northern Portugal, a place of truly stunning natural beauty. One side of the property borders the EN-308-1, just by Vilar da Veiga parish council (Junta de Freguesia). The property is a few minutes from the Caniçada dam and 2.5 Km from the historical spa village of Gerês. It is located in an area of the valley with optimal year-round solar exposure (microclimate), making it agriculturally highly desirable and providing really pleasant living conditions. However, as in most of Northern Portugal, in Autumn and Winter there is heavy rainfall. There is also plenty of high-quality spring water. The land has several constructions in it. A granite family home not fully renovated yet, but already habitable; a small chalet with living and storage space; and a 28 sqm shop by the road (licensed, but not operational yet). There is Wi-Fi available, so this opportunity could suit a part-time remote worker, or someone who could potentially develop their own agreed/compatible activities. We would be open to discuss business/partnership ideas with the right people, including innovative ideas for land use and more.
This opportunity would be particularly suitable for people who already know or have an interest in this area of Portugal and have some Portuguese language skills. It also goes without saying that it only suits physically capable individuals with at least some land maintenance/agricultural experience. If you are considering settling/investing in this region of Portugal, this could be a nice trial experience, benefitting from our informed advice and logistic support. There is a bus stop a few metres from the property, providing a direct link to Braga (and from there to Porto and elsewhere).
