Description

My name is Shym (pronounced shim--legal name is different)-- I'm a 28 year-old community organizer and creative born and raised in the Midwest. I was raised as Fundamental Baptist preacher's kid, but life made a complete 180º. It started with my preacher dad coming out as gay and my parents splitting. Life kept accelerating from there; I spent my Jr. year of high school living in Catamarca, Argentina, studied acting in Chicago for college, began my own journey of learning my queerness, lived in a yoga ashram in Mazunte, Mexico while getting my dental work done, moved to Kansas City, MO to heal my relationship with my father, started traveling to major cities around the country, began freelance creative work, and then COVID hit while I was living in Barcelona, Spain. Since COVID began I've lived in a sprinter van with a partner, communes in the southwest, a Workaway in the mountains of SoCal, and spent 3 months across Senegal, Gambia, Ghana and Berlin filming a documentary about my best friend's ancestral journey. Life has not been boring or slow, to say the least. While this gives you some context for where I've been, I hope it will inspire you to spend time with me learning about how it's shaped me and manifests through me in person!

I'm very motivated, accountable, playful, creative, introspective, empathetic, and process most experiences well in real-time. My passion for life comes from community building and healing the connections between our bodies and the spaces we exist in-- my art tends to reflect this. Entering into a time of greater stability and stillness in the last year, I'm currently living in and building out a communal space in Kansas City, Missouri called Sankofa House--a space for rest, ease, and integration. Additionally I've become quite focused on writing and developing my magnum opus film about grief and projection, while simultaneously developing and editing both a documentary and short narrative film. My queerness, trans/non-binary identities are a large part of my communal life, and I love to invite folks who are curious and expanding into greater understanding through those lenses. I'm of the mind and body that daily practices of curiosity and compassion alongside self-reflection and healing can cure the world's dis-ease.

∞PLAY∞
I truly love all sports; especially basketball, rollerblading, disc golf, frisbee, cycling, kayaking, climbing, adventure sports, swimming, volleyball, etc. I also love all kinds of games, board, mental, card, computer, body-movement. Playfulness is an experience I have at all times, not just in my activities; it's a perspective! My inner-child is very much a part of my life and I value that in others too.

∞LIVING∞
I am very social by nature, but enjoy my time alone and or in parallel play more and more. I value a clean and neat space in communal areas, but am a bit of a creative/chaotic ordered person in private or personal spaces. I appreciate the collaboration of finding balance and ease with the folks I'm with. I care quite a lot about about communal experiences of safety and self-expression. I love to cook vegan meals for myself and others, sharing is natural to me. I desire sunlight, warmth, flowing air, adaptable and changing spaces, natural lighting, sonic privacy, proximity to bodies of water, to name a few elements.

∞COMMUNICATION∞
I prefer direct and vulnerable communication, but practice as much agility as possible in receiving different forms of communication. Some of my practices come from The Circle Way, Non-violent communication, and esoteric practices like astrology, tarot, enneagram, etc.
