  • Description

My name is Liam, I’m 22 years old and I live/grew up in the Boston area of Massachusetts, USA. I just finished my Bachelors degree in Nutrition at the University of Vermont. At the University of Vermont, I ran track and field for all 4 years, my favorite event was the 1 kilometer run. Growing up I have always been a very busy body - I love to play sports, run, lift, hike, and anything in between. I consider myself a nature lover, which was part of my decision to go to school in Vermont. I enjoyed spending times in more rural areas, and seeing the sights by hiking, cliff jumping, swimming in the lake, etc. But don’t be fooled; I am proud to have a life outside of sports. I really enjoy reading, movies (huge fan of studio Ghibli), and almost every weekend in the summer I get to a show to see some live music. This year I learned how to sing / play guitar, I like to cover and write folk type music. For work, I work as a pool manager during the summer (when I am off of school). I really enjoy this job - it gives me the opportunity to interact with customers, practice my leadership skills, and practice my problem solving skills on a daily basis. It has really helped me grow and become more confident as a person.

I have stayed with three different hosts. My first experience was in Arizona, USA in Dec 2020 doing landscaping and general home chores and my host kindly left a review that can be found in the feedback section of my profile. My second experience on workaway took place directly after my first from late Dec 2020 - early Jan 2021, I went to Death Valley in California and worked construction (with power tools) in addition to cooking and general cleanup of the site. Unfortunately that host is no longer on workaway but I still have their contact info and would be happy to share it if needed. My third time using workaway I was traveling with a friend and we met our host through his account; we worked on a farm in Portugal for 2 weeks in June 2022. There was a good variety of work on the farm, it ranged from maintaining the garden and planting young trees to cooking and setting the fences that outlined where the sheep grazed. The feedback is not connected to my profile, but I would also be happy to connect you with that host!

Outside of workaway, my biggest excursion was a month long road trip with two of my friends during the summer of 2021. We started in Colorado and spent most of our time visiting national parks in CO, UT, AZ, and CA (my favorite was Yosemite) before making the drive back east to Vermont. During my stay in Portugal, my friend and I bounced around numerous hostels in Lisbon, Lagos, and Seville, Spain. I met loads of friends and still keep in touch with them!

The most important thing to me in my life right now is acting with authenticity. I like to focus on making strong connections with friends, connecting with myself and my spirituality, and leaving a positive mark on the places and people that I come across. I like to work hard and set myself up for the future, but that comes with balance of course. I take commitment very seriously, but always keep my family, friends, and personal needs in sight. That being said, who says work can’t be fun! I like to get to know the people around me and bring each other up. If I have learned one thing as a manager it is that operations run much more smoothly if you build connections with your team and genuinely care about them. Conflict is inevitable, but if you take the time to get to know and support your team, they will work with you when things are running less smoothly.

As I mentioned before, I just finished my Bachelors degree. I start a Masters program in the fall of 2024, so this year I am really looking to soak in some life experiences and travel. My favorite part of travel is the people I meet and the relationships I form. Meeting new people and understanding their environment helps me see through a different lens, and I believe that is what helps me grow. I'm always eager to see more and explore what the world has to offer! I look forward to crossing paths with other hosts and travelers and I am excited to see what the future holds!

  • More details about your skills

I would consider myself pretty handy, I love working with wood and dirt. I have some experience putting up fencing/fence posts, general labor (moving rocks, shoveling dirt, etc), and landscaping. I spent some time in Mississippi helping build houses and I am no stranger to long days in the sun.

My job as a pool manager has also prepared me well to work on teams (especially as a leader) and interact with the public.
