  • Description

Hello! My name is Elsa and I am looking to spend some time in Sweden this summer 2023 between August and September. I am excited by the projects that are available here and I am really looking forward to meeting new people and helping out in any way that I can.

I live in Manchester and have just finished my third year (out of four) at university, studying international development and economics. I also took two 'gap' years before starting university, in which I spent one year teaching English in a primary school in Ongole, India, and the second working full-time at a sushi restaurant before being furloughed because of covid-19. I was born in Sweden but grew up in the North West of England. Aside from my parents, who live in the UK, all of my family live in the south of Sweden and we try to visit as often as possible. This summer I hope to spend time in Sweden to learn more about its cultures, histories, and languages, which I actually know little about even though it is my home country.

I feel I have a positive outlook on life, I am a good listener and I laugh a lot. I am interested in learning new things and I pick up new skills quickly. I absolutely love to dance, and at university I have fallen in love with a number of Indian dance styles, particularly Bharatnatyam and Bhangra. I also love being outdoors and feel most at peace in nature, something I have found difficult living without in a big city. The relationships in my life are also everything to me, and spending time with friends, family, and connecting with new people is a fundamental part of my happiness.

I have done one Workaway project in the past with my partner Finn, where we worked on the beautiful Isle of Mull in Scotland. It was a fantastic experience living the island life, working in a cafe, helping with gardening, housekeeping, and cleaning the self-catered accommodation as well as serving ice cream in a shack by the beach. I am looking forward to continuing this journey with Workaway and seeing where it takes me next!

  • More details about your skills

-I have experience in childcare and teaching. In 2018 I volunteered in India with Project Trust for 11 months and taught English and Art in a Primary School, as well as assisting the teachers in the Nursery classes. Before this, I also volunteered as a ‘monitor’ for ATE Superweeks, where I delivered large group games, supervised all daily activities, and most importantly ensured the happiness and safety of the children on the residential.

-My parents have a full-sized allotment, and I have spent many summers working there and have picked up a few gardening skills from that. I have also helped with gardening jobs and animal care in Hälsingland where I have family who own an apple farm.

-I also enjoy cleaning and would be more than happy to help out with anything around the house that needs doing. I can also cook and bake, although I am not a super confident cook if I am completely honest.

-I have a lot of experience working in the hospitality sector, working at restaurants and cafes, where I have developed good interpersonal and customer service skills.

-I have experience in social media content creation and video editing, and I have recently been employed by the Royal British Institute of Architecture to run the social media accounts and website for The Journal of Architecture (www.thejournalofarchitecture.com). I love watercolour painting and illustration, and if you need some art for a business or anything similar I would be happy to work on that.
