Eyo-hola amigos! Cecile here, a traveller and workawayer who has been around Portugal and Spain in the last two months. Currently continuing my travels and adventures in Morocco <3

A bit about me: I am a 22 years old curious Dutch human being living in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands. I have been raised by a Dutch father and a Peruvian mother, which is why I also speak a "Dutchy" Spanish ;). Last year I finished my bachelors Liberal Arts & Sciences, a study in which I directed myself on the track of sustainable development. Along with this, I tend to the field of cultural anthropology, which is why I am doing a masters in this next year. I am also interested in permaculture, food forestry, environmental philosophy and indigenous knowledge about the environment.

Currently, I am enjoying a gap year full of things I have always wanted to do. I have started writing, doing art performance and volunteering for a food forestry campaign. But I have also started to do some more ‘lummelen’, which is the dutch word for chilling. ;)

Now, I feel it in my guts that it is time for me to be elsewhere for a while, which is why I am very excited to leave the Netherlands and live life in Portugal for some time!

So I do not have any hard(-core) skills, but the intention to learn them are very much present! I would love to master the skill of gardening (permaculture, food forestry), wildcrafting and handcrafting (aka upcycling, buidling furniture etc.).

In terms of soft skills, I would ascribe myself as a enthustiastic, passionate, curious, creative and flexible person. I am both collaborative and independent.

Kind and vibrant soul who danced, took on dirty jobs like digging out the spring and slayed tasks like calling sawmills to get quotes for wood in Spain. She took on community shifts with ease and was absolutely wonderful to have here! We will see her back here in July!

Even though it has been almost a month since I left Phil and Helen’s place, their smallholding and village still lives in my mind vividly. The eleven days I stayed there, left me with lots of positive thoughts on their place.. :

About the accomodation: Phil and Helen’s house is a wonderfully renovated farmhouse from 1734. The house is surrounded… read more by beautiful lands that belong to the smallholding, including the grasslands, gardens, polytunnel. The rooms for workawayers are currently in the house next to the farmhouse, which are kind of dusty, but they’re fine with a little sweep!

About the work: the work can be hardphysically aswell!) but enjoyable: cutting bracken, chopping branches, cleaning out ponds.. it’s varied and as long as you find your own structure that keeps you going, it’s fun!

About the area: after work you have plenty of free time to rest and explore the beautiful surroundings (villages, lakes etc.) by foot or by bike.

About the food: splendid! After work you’ll get a really tasty and extensive lunch at Helen’s bar/restaurant (Helen cooks delicous meals!). At dinner-time, Phil does the cooking, and if you like you could help him pick up fresh vegetables and chop them up for a soup, wok or a “stock”. He could secretly teach you a little cooking, but don’t tell Helen because she is the chef!

About the hosts: Phil and Helen are very polite people, a little quiet sometimes, but you get used to their ways, as they get used to yours. When I arrived, I was surprised to learn they are from Yorkshire instead of Brittany (France), since I wanted to learn a little french. But in the end I improved my english - plus it was interesting to see how their life is ‘frenchified’ in several ways and how they have blended into their breton village.

Helen is the one who runs the bar/restaurant in the village, which forms the social centre of the village as well. Phil is the one who runs the smallholding and works with the workawayers. Ask him as many questions (as I did), and he will teach you a lot. Not only is there much to learn concerning the maintenance of a smallholding and permaculture (mindset) ... there is also plenty to learn about living in a village and about breton culture and history. I learned many things from Phil, and really enjoyed his good stories and terrible jokes!
