Hello world!

My name is Jianing, I am 23 years old and am from China. Currently, I am living in Barcelona to study Spanish(Castellano), therefore I'd like to enrich my time here by joining volunteer work in and around Cataluña, an area which I constantly feel amazed by what it has to offer and attracted to explore more!

I graduated from university with a doble bachelor degree in economics and Spanish, after that I worked as Front-end developer in a start-up IT company whose main focus was to promote the idea as well as the sustainable solution of second-hand market. I am very interested in being involved in a sustainable life style, and I can also technical help such as building websites for small projects.

I have a passion for craft(wo)manship, although I haven't had much chance to immerse myself full time into crafting but I love working with hands and in my spare time I like to make macreme accessories and watch a lot of youtube videos about different kinds of craft(wo)manship. I am interested in both delicate scale of manual work such as ceramic, glass, screen printing, as well as more physical involved painting, pluming, especially carpentry. I don't have professional experience in these fields but I am always ready to be a fast and responsible learner, so If you are looking for handy help in these project, I would be happy to participate!

I am a quick learner and have a good work ethic. I am physically fit and healthy, do not have any dietary requirements. I am open minded and chill, always love to explore different cultures and to learn new aspects. I started visiting different countries as a traveler since 2019, when I have more time I always try to travel with volunteering and meeting local people and learning local lifestyle. Despite of many visa restrictions, I see myself continuing this way of living in the future years.

I am a sports and art person. I enjoy hiking, gym, football, cycling, skateboarding, bouldering, also street photography, art history and reading. I like swing dance and also try to learn some afro dance. I love specialty coffee and sensory related experience in general, I can offer help as barista with pour over coffee, espresso and latte art. I usually travel with my coffee equipments and will be happy to share a cup of coffee with you.

I am not the type of travelers who can immediately become people's best friend, but I am properly sociable and a very good listener. With a little bit of time, I will be more talkative and extroverted.

I have experience in hospitality tasks:
- I worked in hostels as receptionist, helped with general cleaning and daily event management.
- I worked in a specialty coffee shop as barista/waitress, where I greet the customer, prepare coffee/food, track daily usage of materials.

I have experience in language exchange:
- I taught English to elementary school students for four years during my university degree.
- I taught Chinese to international exchange students in my university from time to time for three years.

As of skills related to coffee, I can prepare delicious filter coffee, cold brew, coffee with moka pot, if you have an espresso machine, I can also help with espresso based drinks and latte art. That being said, I am also interested in getting involved in other kind of beverage serving tasks.

As I worked my "proper job" as a front end developer and I am self-paced learning design. I am happy to help with web design and web development, especially for personal projects where more emotions and devotion are involved.

I'd like to continue to expand my practical skills though different projects, and learn from my host as well as other workawayers! At the moment I am especially interested into carpentry related help and would be fascinated to participate in some wood works.

I am writing this feedback four months after my stay. First i want to thank and Festim and his lovely family for having for two weeks in their hostel, the kids are absolutely lovely with whom i spent most of time playing with when i was free. Festim is a great guy with a warm heart, he responded very quick after i applied and pick me up at the bus… read more station, sonila is a great person as well with a genius heart and hard working spirit.
Then, i want to say to the dear future travellers what to be expected during the stay. It was not like mentioned in the profile that the host offers the volunteers to take them to the beach/museum/other small villages around, none of them happened during my stay which might be a result of busy season in the summer. The hostel is an old house without airconditioning, so it was very hot in the summer especially in august. The work was pretty easy, just some light reception work and to make the beds, but the communication was ineffective with the host when i asked for the working schedule, as it is a small family run hostel there is no such thing as shift or working schedule, the host expected me to stay in the hostel every day during the week for more than 12 hours. Sometimes i stay in the hostel from the morning to 5 pm, as we were two volunteers at that time we took turns to perform this schedule that made up by ourselves. So it was a lot of free time but in the hostel, i counldnt do manby visit to the city or places around the city, as the host was busy with other things would not be there, which are way more than 25 hours per week. And the host never mention the weekend break if i dont ask as we didnt have any schedule, and i didnt ask for it cause the host family was so nice and i wanted to avoid conflict, so during my stay of twoo weeks i think i had only one day when i was totally free.
The positive side is, i met great people and travellers in the hostel as it would happen in any other hostel, during my long period of staying at the reception, with some of them we became good friends and stayed in touch.
So dear workawayers, if you decide to stay with this hostel please make sure you ask for the proper scedule and the working hour, otherwise if you dont mention it would become almost like a full time job.
Festim and sonila are planning to open a new hostel which is more modern and closer to the beach, best wishes to you and i hope everything goes perfect!
