  • Description

Hello, and thanks for taking a look at my profile! My name is Madrianne and I am taking an open-ended journey through the world, starting in Europe. I am a US citizen and have worked a "desk job" for the Department of Veterans Affairs for the past 7 years, and wrapped up my work in July 2017 so that I could travel the world and learn about new places, cultures, and gain new skills and knowledge. I have been working in the field of mental health, most recently in the realm of suicide prevention. I am drawn to mountains and water, enjoy being outside, and love meeting new people! I am excited about the potential of helping you as I travel!

Workaway has been such an incredible resource through my travels. So far, I have worked in an art studio at a Buddhist Meditation Centre in the Lake District, England, and am currently drilling caves, gardening, and taking care of 5 dogs, a cat, and a hawk in an off-grid (solar powered) cave in Andalusia, Spain. I’ve loved connecting with people through volunteering, learning so many new skills, and fueling my journey with purpose. Let me learn from you and help you out!

  • What skills do you have?

I am seeking to learn new skills and work with my hands! I’m great with animals and people, and bring positive, calm energy to my work. I can cook and bake, clean, make kombucha, and cut hair. I would love to learn how to build and fix things, and to farm and grow food.

I have worked in mental health for seven years and am great with dealing with people, including difficult clients. I have great written and verbal communication skills. I am also a good problem solver, organizer, and critical thinker. I am fairly good with technology and know how to seek out the information and tools I need to figure out how to achieve a goal.

I enjoy tasks that require attention to small details, and learn quickly! I am not afraid to ask questions to make sure I understand what tasks are required, and am always thinking about how to make processes more efficient. Most of all, I enjoy hands-on learning. I look forward to working with you!

  • What else ...

I enjoy working with others— teamwork is important to me, and I work better when I have work comrades.

My previous supervisor was kind enough to write me a letter of recommendation that I can share with you:

    To Whom It May Concern:

It is my pleasure to provide this highest recommendation for Ms. Madrianne Wong. I have known Madrianne for 6 years. During that time, she worked for the US Department of Veterans Affairs Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) in a variety of capacities of increasingly more complex work and higher level of responsibility. Her roles involved working with US military veterans and families as a helpline call responder, providing resources, supporting and coaching veterans to seek care, as a research assistant conducting sensitive suicide risk assessments with veterans, and supporting several high-level program management assignments for the VA’s Women’s Mental Health Program, Suicide Prevention Program, and a mental health task force.

Across these roles, she has exhibited a strong work ethic, strong organizational and communication skills, strong leadership skills, deep intellectual curiosity and desire for learning, strong ethical judgment, ability to think and learn quickly, ability to work and flow between diverse groups of people, and in interest in making meaningful contributions to society.

Madrianne has an ability to improve everything she touches, thinking about the larger goal while able to consider all possible permutations at the most detailed level of inspection, well beyond my own ability. Her process is deeply thoughtful, always asking questions such as “How can we make this more efficient?,” “Where can we improve?,” “What will make these processes smoother?” She loves taking on new challenges and craves gaining new experiences, making mentoring her a joy. I cannot recall any time when she ever complained about the amount of work she had on her plate, even though she often took on more work than was required of her. She not only takes her work seriously and is extremely diligent and conscientious in all that she endeavors, but she has a natural inclination to strive for excellence and leadership that is recognized and respected by all team members.

On an interpersonal level, Madrianne is a joy to work with. She is well-grounded, has a great sense of humor, and is easy-going. During her time working, she had a very healthy work-life balance with many interesting and unique extra-curricular activities reflective of her commitment to ongoing and lifelong learning and growth (rock-climbing, biking, serving as an art docent for a local museum, learning to play a very rare instrument from one of the few people in the world who can play it). Madrianne also displayed a high level of courtesy and care for our veterans, a large majority of whom have significant co-morbid medical and mental health concerns, live in chaotic life environments, and are difficult to work with.

As you can imagine, she is a true gem. It is clear that with her ability and talent, she will excel in whatever she pursues. I believe that travel and the new experiences she seeks can unlock further potential in her. She yearns for growth, and I give my highest recommendation for her and expect that anyone writing a recommendation for her would do the same.

    Cordially,
