  • Description

Greetings! We’re Kat and Paul. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to fulfill a long time dream to become nomads and travel now that our kids, Helen and Karl are young adults. I’m taking a break from my work as a psychotherapist and furthering my enjoyment of art making, cooking, being outdoors with our dog and of course travel. I served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer and am eager to return to Thailand as part of our travel plans. We are also excited to travel in many other parts of the world. Paul is retiring from his career in project management and engineering. We both love hiking, biking, being in nature and dinner gatherings with friends. Paul and I love cross culture adventures and getting to know people from around the world. We’ve hosted 6 high school students from China over the years and thoroughly enjoyed this experience. We even had the opportunity to meet some of their families in China! One of our mottos is that we like to leave places better than we found them whether that’s by making positive relationships, showing extra love to animals and children, finding solutions to situations, making repairs, and leaving places tidy. We are both vaccinated for COVID 19, are non-smokers and appreciate our good health. We have many positive reviews on AirBnB!! We look forward to joining with folks around the world and contributing to their lives while we enrich our own lives.

More details about my language interests
We would love any opportunity to learn Spanish. We are very much beginners. I’d also love to grow my Thai language skills or learn a new language. I’m not necessarily great at learning languages, but I love the challenge and am motivated to learn in order to connect with people. I also love teaching English and have experience as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand. I taught English to 7th, 8th and 9th graders as well as adults. I developed much of my own experiential curriculum incorporating games, role playing and singing to make it interesting and fun.

  • More details about your skills

I am a Social Worker and artist and recently closed my private practice in order to join my husband, Paul, in retirement. I have been involved in community organizing, social justice issues and have worked in the field of mental health in many settings. I’ve worked with a wide variety of people and love connecting with people of all ages and backgrounds. I have an undergraduate degree in Art Education and am an artist, most recently doing mosaic work and collage. I taught English to high school students and adults in Thailand for two years as a U.S.Peace Corps volunteer and am able to speak basic Thai. I’ve been using Duo Lingo to learn Spanish and am still very much a beginner! I love opportunities to improve my language skills as well as share English. I have experience with children, being a step mom to my husband’s children who are now adults and being an aunt to my nieces and their children. I would say that I have many domestic skills having been raised to learn how to care for a house, and family. Friends and family would say that I’m a good cook and I really enjoy spending time being creative with food and entertaining. My artistic inclination has me skilled with working with my hands making things, fixing things and building things. I love creative DIY projects around the home and garden. I grew up appreciating our small family garden and enjoying getting my hands in the dirt. I had a summer job at a hosta nursery and acquired some basic knowledge and skill. I’m a hard worker and enjoy a good days work and the feeling of satisfaction stepping back and appreciating accomplishment. I am an enthusiastic learner and am willing to try many things. I love to laugh, play, dance, listen to music, camp, hike, bike, kayak and fair weather outdoors activities. I love caring for animals and miss our dog, Alice, terribly when we travel. I don’t have experience caring for farm animals but would love the opportunity.

Paul is retiring from his work as a project manager for an environmental restoration company. He has a degree in chemical engineering and has a great deal of knowledge about issues involving soil, water and related projects. Paul and I connected with neighbors who were developing a large scale garden to grow produce for the neighborhood following the unrest which left grocery stores boarded up. We raised funds, procured supplies and helped create the foundation for a lasting project. The produce was distributed to pop-up stores throughout the neighborhood for people to access for free. Paul loves kids and they love him! He was a coach for his son’s baseball team years ago and a very involved parent. Our neighbors know Paul for organizing “Dog Church”… Sunday morning free play-time for neighborhood dogs and their people. Paul loves camping biking and the outdoors and has visited many of the national parks in the U.S. He calls a long, rigorous hike “a walk in the woods” and this is where he is in his element. He of course, loves travel and exploring new places and meeting local people. Paul is dedicated to his Duo Lingo practice and is a beginner in Spanish language. We had plenty of opportunity to learn and practice speaking Spanish recently when we drove with with Alice (our dog) from our home in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He is eager for more adventure and finding ways to contribute to communities along the way.

  • What else ...

Paul and I enjoy playing games. We play a lot of Cribbage, Mexican Train Dominoes and learned to play Mahjong while we were in China.
While I lean toward being an extrovert, I also enjoy quiet contemplative time, making art, doing Pilates and reading or listening to books about the regions we travel to. Paul and I both practice meditation and enjoy long walks in nature. Paul is more introverted than I and also enjoys socializing and learning about other people.
