    Description

The house you'll be staying in was built from wood taken from the mountain behind us and milled on site. It was rebuilt in the 1940s after a fire.
Behind the house in their own space are 4 cozy cottages we rent, and maintain for guests generally on vacation but sometimes longer term. Each cottage takes under 1 hour to clean and ready for the next guest.
Our property features nearly 3km of professionally built trails which are more geared for the intermediate mountain bike rider. We have an extra bike on site.
We have a beautiful labrador retriever who is part of most of what we do. He's happy go lucky and very affectionate and well behaved.
There are a couple of bonfire pits one more for guests and one tucked beside the B&B home. Across the road through a short path is access to a rocky ocean beach. Not really suited for swimming but we're not far from some absolutely spectacular beaches. In winter months, we usually get lots of snow. There's skiing, snowshoeing and lots to do outdoors in winter here.
Tourism season is very busy and off season is a different flavor of peace and quiet.
Our candidate will help with typical cottage duties. Our someone is also handy and can assist/lead in some small renovations. Some of the renos will include removing a window and replacing with an exterior door for your suite, and assembly of an ikea kitchen cabinet unit for your suite as well.

We would be sharing our family with you. We are a husband and wife business partnership with an active and wholesome 8 year old child. Rural Cape Breton - more particularly the Cabot Trail is rich with experiences in and around Cape Breton Highlands National Parks. We will share local food, music and cultural experiences with our workawayer. Learning wise, we are able to offer much in the lines of hands-on tasks on the property ranging from simple lawn-mowing to building and maintenance of trails and gardens. I am also a professional trail builder (we have almost 3km of trails here on our property) and plenty of options to learn this craft, as well as driving the mechanized equipment we use.

    Accommodation

We would be sharing our home which used to function as a bed and breakfast. The workawayer would live on the main floor in a room with its own shower/toilet/sink ensuite adjacent to another bedroom which may be used for either guests of staff. Part of the project work is installing an exterior door in this room where there is currently a window to give exterior access to the room making it more of an apartment.
During peak summer months, we may have rental units provisioned (on the property) for staff / workawayers but at a minimum we have rooms with ensuite bathroom and access to kitchen. Oftentimes we include our staff / team in meals in our home as well.
Our property is located right off the world famous Cabot Trail facing both a stunning lake and the ocean. Behind us, we have a completely stunning view of mountains which are essentially our 26 acre back yard that backs on to 83,000 hectares of undeveloped crown land, and the Cape Breton Highlands.
Accommodations are included as part of our participation in the Workaway program.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

In your time off, explore beaches, trails, a ski hill that operates its Gondola all year around, local food and musical events. Cape Breton in particular this area of the Cabot Trail is beyond breathtaking. We've got loads of animals like Fox, Rabbits, owls and water birds, Eagles, Deer, Moose and lots more which are often passing through or around the property. Our nearly 3km trail system is growing and built to favor a challenging and exciting mountain biking experience. We're about 5km from the nearest general store, and 15minutes drive to the ski hill.
We're a pretty quiet family and after a day of work in the summer time will often enjoy a fire, a walk on our trails or some time watching the waves.
We're aiming to create an inclusive experience here and looking for someone who is positive, friendly, enjoys kids and dogs, is adventurous in spirit and will enjoy meeting our guests with a bright smile.
