Paul and Jackie live in the small rural township of Okaihau nestled between the beautiful Bay of Islands and the Hokianga Harbour. Paul is a paramedic who works shift work and I (Jackie) has been a nurse for 30 years and is now trying out different types of work, teaching cooking and working in retail. We are both involved in a voluntary developing a local community park which is currently in the planting phase of this work.
Our home is in a phase of renovation. So if you are a painter, builder or decorator we sure could do with some help. Our back yard and garden is filled with an array of plants including native plants and herbs and tea trees which we hope to develop into making herbal gifts, teas and herbal remedies.
So our garden is an ongoing project with plenty of opportunity to help with its development, weeding, planting, landscaping.
We have de two small friendly dogs so you need to be comfortable with animals in and around the house.
We are non-smokers, so prefer non-smokering visitors.
Life is busy for us so you need to be easy going and able to fit in and around our work commitments with limited need for supervision. We are normally up early so you need to be someone who can easily get up in the morning, i.e between 7 and 8 a.m. We find hosting people for a maximum of a week works best. Longer periods can be negotiated but only once we have had the opportunity to meet you and see if things work in with us at the time.
Visitors need to have their own transportation i.e a car, as Okaihau is about 16 and 26 km from the nearest towns and there is is no direct public transport. Having your own car allows you to easily access nearby tourist townships of Kerikeri, Paihia and Rawene and the beaches of the Bay of Islands and Hokianga. Okaihau is a central point on the coast to coast cycle trail.
It seems sometimes I have missed some emails and therefore it can appear that I am slow to reply. I will always message you once I get your email, but do try to contact us at least a week or so in advance if at all possible. We look forward to hearing from you.
